How many “flips” does it take to make your Smartphone super-sexy. The answer? Three flexible AMOLED touchscreens and a keyboard on the reverse! Here’s what the Flip Phone feels like: a smart triangular piece held together with soft steel mesh hinges, hosting a custom flavor of Android. The boundaries of a PC and phone have smudged-up big time and this is a sample of what that future looks like. I love it!

:)

Sigh, just how bodoh can one get?

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today said he is not afraid to debate with PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, but said the Opposition leader should solve his “personal problem” of his sodomy charge before meddling with other affairs.

“Why should I afraid of debating with him? I’m prime minister, I have all information. If I expose them… adoi… he will get a fever,” quipped Najib to the laughter of over 7,000 Felda settlers in Felda Chemplak, Tenang today.

“Do I need to debate with him?” asked Najib, who was met with a resounding “No!” from the animated crowd.

Err. What do unproven sodomy accusations have to do with the Opposition Leader challenging the Prime Minister to a debate on the economy?

It’s so very simple, if Najib is not afraid, then debate. If he don’t debate, means he sees that he has more to lose than to gain by doing so. Anything else is mere spin.

So? Bacul say bacul lah!

I couldn’t really think of anywhere to put this, but in the spirit of Android openess, I wanted to put it *somewhere*

So, I’ve been having this problem where phone numbers that I tried to add as a new contact would not show up in my contact list.

(Very frustrating if you were looking for that number of the pretty girl you just re/met :)

It appears my problem was solveable by:

1) Going to Contacts

2) Going to Display Options

3) Clicking on your main Google account under “Choose Contacts to Display”

Here I had a lot of different checkable boxes, one of which was completely blank for some reason (just above All Other Contacts, in my case). After I checked it, my problems seemed to have gone away. Hope it stays that way!

As usual, just putting up TMI article :) Taking a quick break to write about some fun tech stuff instead :P Pics included.

The Atrix 4G — one heart, many bodies

JAN 17 — Part of me fears that if I write another article aboutKrishnan and Sargunan, about Shamil Hafiz Shafie, Mohd Khairul Nizam Tuah and Hanafi Omar, or about Chia Buang Hing, I will not only sound like a broken record, but might begin to lose what little sanity I have left. I hope, nonetheless, you’ll click on the links though.

Permit me very briefly to use this space for a much less noble exploration, and indulge in some tech speculation.

We’re fresh off a number of cool announcements at and around the Consumer Electronics Show 2011 held in Las Vegas (which I understand was held in the same place and about the same time as the Adult Video News annual convention. I feel I probably shouldn’t elaborate on how nice it would have been to visit Las Vegas that time of year).

My interest lies primarily in computers and mobile devices, the latter of which seems to continue developing at an exciting pace.

As usual, given that software development in other platforms is lagging too far behind to pique any interest, I like to focus on the competition between Android and Apple devices (avoiding, of course, all the boredom that comes with being excessively objective or neutral).

iPhone? iZzzz

I note with interest that on the Apple end of things, the only thing to generate major interest was the announcement that Verizon in the US was now going to carry the iPhone4.

This was deemed significant because prior to this, Americans who wanted an iPhone could only get one through AT&T, deemed to have a considerably lousier network than Verizon.

The more enthusiastic Apple evangelists even heralded this event as the end of Android, stating that the only reason anyone got an Android was so that the wouldn’t have to deal with AT&T’s crappy network.

Even Malaysian iPhone enthusiasts seemed excited about this — probably because next to a white iPhone (yawn), this seemed to be the most exciting news there was out there (nevermind that this new iPhone4 was CDMA and not GSM-based, thus inoperable in Malaysia).

How lamentable that iPhone fans would be reduced to getting excited about such inane, barely relevant developments; having hordes of screaming fans lining up to get the exact same phone… except… in… white… seems, alas, just a little sad.

Android strides

Here my fellow Android enthusiasts differ, in that there is always something new and exciting just over the horizon.

From glassless 3D screens to Playstation phones, somebody is always pushing the limits of Android-enabled technology, without having to wait under Steve Jobs’ “benevolent” dictatorship.

In this article, I’d like to explore one device and feature in particular.

The phone in question is the Motorola Atrix 4G, one of a handful of dual-core Android handphones announced in the last month or so.

The dual-core processor is quite a feat in and of itself — we are talking here about handphones that pack a processing punch that probably outperforms many desktops still being used daily here in Malaysia.

What was to me by far the most exciting development about this phone, however, was the inclusion of a laptop dock.

Redefining mobile computing

Said dock looks exactly like a netbook — keyboard, monitor and all. What it does not have, is an actual computer inside — an empty shell as it were.

So how does this magic work? You simply dock your Atrix 4g smartphone into the back of the laptop, and voila! The Atrix 4g now serves as a computer that brings the laptop to life. Your phone is now singlehandedly powering a complete computing experience.

Along with this physical accessory, Motorola has designed what they call a Webtop interface.

When you plug the Atrix 4g into the laptop — or into another docking accessory that allows it to easily hook up to a large screen HDTV, keyboard and mouse — the phone switches to a Webtop interface, which allows you access to all the phone’s features, on top of a desktop-optimised interface.

This Webtop interface has a full fledged Firefox browser, file managers, and so on — giving it the feel of a real computer.

One heart, many bodies

I find that this represents exciting, real innovation, and a step in the right direction.

As more computing power gets packed into smaller and smaller devices, why should we bother to carry more and more gadgets?

The Atrix 4g represents the first step towards an approach wherein your phone is like a heart that can power a multitude of machines, depending on your needs.

This road could conceivably end in a scenario where you take one little phone sized device with you everywhere you go, and plug it in — as necessary — into desktop-sized interfaces, laptops, tablets, or whatever suits your fancy. One heart, many bodies.

I’m delighted that the open source spirit of Android continues to inspire and enable such developments. I look forward to all sorts of massive innovations long before Steve rolls out the probably-by-then-obsolete iPhone5.

He didn’t think he’d get away that easily did he?

Jelas.info presents What Najib Said vs. What Najib Meant (#WNSvWNM)

Enjoy!

Q: Pirates vs. Ninjas – who do you think will win?

WNS: “depends where the duel takes place. Land = ninjas. Sea = priates”

WNM: Dua-dua pun bodoh, klo nak menang pakailah C4.

Q: Baju Datuk Seri, siapa yang ironkan?

WNS: “Kalau ada masa, saya memang nak iron baju sendiri…. sejak masuk politik, takde masa… nasib baiklah ada pembantu rumah untuk ironkan baju saya”

WNM: WTF kind of idiot question is that. The person who irons my clothes is paid enough to hire someone else to iron her clothes. But I’m not allowed to hire any young women for the jobla… Neither is Rais

Q: Do you see the glass half empty or half full?

WNS: “Invariably I like to see it half full”

WNM: Actually, the only full I like is Saifull

Q: Pernah bacakah buku The Prince?

WNS: “Saya pernah baca buku The Prince, dan saya ingat lagi beberapa quotation.. tapi saya bukan peminat The Prince atau Machiavelli. Dalam bidang politik, saya tidak mengamalkan prinsip Machiavelli”

WNM: Machiavellian? I’d have to grow a pair first, brah.

Q: Where can I get some nice char kuey teow

WNS: “If you come to my open house during Aidilfitri, you will get nice char kuey teow”

WNM: You expect a handout more than once a year? Fck off!

Q: Are you jealous of Khairul (Msian goalkeeper) because he trended and now it’s your turn?

WNS: “I’m happy that a fellow Malaysian has trended and become an idol among the young people. I think it’s good we have more and more such personalities”

WNM: Are you trying to get me killed?!?! DO NOT MENTION THE WORD “jealous” IN FRONT OF SHE WHO MUST NOT BE NAMED!

Your own #WNSvWNM interpretations are most welcome :)

ps- Najib seems to end the video with some sort of evil laugh. I have no frikkin’ clue what he meant by that, but it scared the shit out of me. What do you think he was laughing about?

This post comes a bit late, but: Another man has bravely stepped forward to bear witness about how the police beat a man to death.

The witness who allegedly saw a man being beaten to death in a police lock-up has lodged a police report.

In his police report, Sargunan, who is also victim M Krishnan’s friend, said that they were in a mutual friend’s house in Cheras when the police stormed in late at night on Jan 2.

The police allegedly made both of them lie on their stomachs, then started kicking and stomping on their backs with boots on.

They were taken to the Bukit Jalil police station for alleged drug-related offences.

Sargunan, a 34-year-old taxi driver, also said Krishnan had confided in him over how the police had beaten him up and showed him his bruises on his ribs in the lock-up.

Krishnan said he was in extreme pain and could not breathe and then he started vomiting,” said Sargunan in his police report.

Over the four days that they were detained, Sargunan said that Krishnan had pleaded with the police to take him to hospital for treatment.

Sargunan claimed that Krishnan was instead dragged out of the lock-up and beaten up before being thrown back into the lock-up.

Krishnan died at the Bukit Jalil police lock-up last Friday.

While his family claimed that he had been assaulted – based on bruises and cuts on the body – the police and the hospital have claimed that he died due to a stomach ulcer.

>:(

I don’t know what to say anymore, that I haven’t said a hundred times already – and to no avail.

The last time a witness accused the cops of beating someone to death, that man – one Selvach Santhiran – was himself beaten by police, and is now being detained without trial.

Will Sargunan be next? It’s too late for Krishnan (though not for justice), but will we at least spread the word on Selvach and Sargunan, to see that they do not meet similar or worse fates?

Najib on Anwar’s challenge to a debate:

Najib did not refuse outright the challenge to debate but questioned the point of such an exercise.

“If we want to debate, there must be an outcome from the debate.

“I do not see one and what is important is public opinion,” he told reporters

OO

The only part that he got right is that ‘what is important is public opinion’.

If you ask me, public opinion is that his refusal to debate means Najib is chicken.

His “there’s no outcome” reasoning is proper bullshit. What he means is “there’s no outcome in which I will benefit politically from”.

If Najib is confident in his policies, his numbers, and his administration, a public debate is the perfect avenue for him to put Anwar in his place.

Him not wanting to step up to the plate just substantiates all the criticism about corruption, economic numbers that don’t add up and a complete disregard for the freedom of information.

I do hate it when people say stupid things:

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak lambasted today the opposition’s 100-day reform plan, which was unveiled last month, describing it as populist and irresponsible. He said the plan was unrealistic because it did not state the source of funds to finance the undertaking.

“We should not be too populist to the extent of pawning the country’s future. We should not act that way; it’s irresponsible and will cause our children and grandchildren to suffer.

“In fact, it won’t take that long; in just two years, according to our estimates, our country will become like Greece if the plan is implemented without regard to the country’s means to implement it,”

First, allow me to refer you to my colleague Rafizi’s quick response, backed up with numbers and real research.

Beyond that, I do not enjoy rehashing comments already made, so I seek your indulgence in allowing me to repeat comments made last May, which I think are still eminently relevant:

MK:

Malaysia risks becoming the next Greece unless voters swallow subsidy cuts that will see the price of petrol, food, electricity and other staples rise, a government minister warned today.

Idris Jala, a minister in the prime minister’s department who heads the body advising the government, said that Malaysia’s debt would rise to 100 percent of gross domestic product by 2019 from 54 percent of GDP at present without the cuts.

“We don’t want to end up as another Greece,” he told a roadshow, referring to the European Union member whose debt woes have unsettled global markets.

100% disagree: subsidies is what could make us another Greece.

100% agree: we are on our way to becoming another Greece.

Now, I understand this Idris Jala chap isn’t too bad a guy, but what he is saying here is straight out of the BN bullshit spin handbook.

Does anyone believe for a second that the real problem behind Malaysia’s economy = too many subsidies?

I’ll admit that from an economic point of view, the issue of subsidies are contentious.

Nonetheless, I’m absolutely confident that it is a drop in the ocean compared to what is really destroying and ruining our economy, and truly bringing us close to a Greek scale tragedy: corruption.

Observe Wikipedia:

However, the Greek economy also faces significant problems, including rising unemployment levels, inefficient bureaucracy, tax evasion and corruption.

In 2009, Greece had the EU’s second lowest Index of Economic Freedom (after Poland), ranking 81st in the world. The country suffers from high levels of political and economic corruption and low global competitiveness relative to its EU partners.

Oh. Sound familiar?

No need to repeat our litany of RM 500 million submarine commissions, MCA presidents who get fired because of PKFZ investigations, missing jet engines, election bribery. (whoops, just did).

So, YB Idris and YAB Najib, please don’t try to mislead the rakyat. Removing subsidies hurts the least protected in society – why don’t you remove the corruption that is bleeding the entire nation dry, just so you can line your own pockets.
