Irrelevant to this post, but couldn’t help including this image today!

Today, Mr. “Pendatang:

Umno Bukit Bendera mengadakan pemilihan baru 11 Julai ini — langkah bagi membolehkan bekas ketua bahagian Datuk Ahmad Ismail kembali memegang jawatan tersebut selepas dua tahun ‘berehat’ ekoran kontroversi didakwa mengeluarkan kenyataan rasis.

Day before, Mr. “Cina ni pelacur”:

Nasir Safar, the former special officer to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, has been exonerated by the authorities of stoking racial flames during his speech in Malacca earlier this year.

1Malaysia?

Wow. You can say whatever you damn well please in this country. Just make sure you’re not the poor reporter covering it :P

And further on that count, while Najib waxes lyrical of the billions and billions he wants to make (read: steal), here’s a hint on how it’s going to be distributed:

Prime Minister Najib Razak said he did not promise to do away with the affirmative action with regard to helping the Malays and bumiputeras when he introduced the New Economic Model
(NEM).

“I did not promise to do away with it. I promised a new approach,” he said during an exclusive interview with Singapore-based Channel News Asia (CNA) which was aired in Singapore last night.

Short question: Anything changed?

Short answer: Nope.

Let’s hope Pakatan does a better job of sticking to its reform agenda.

"What're you gonna do if they repeal Prohibition?" "I think I'm gonna get a drink"

TMI:

Tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan today accused illegal bookmakers of spending millions of ringgit to fund a campaign to torpedo his plans for legalised football betting, and would wait for the right conditions to revive plans, gaming analysts said today.

He also told gaming industry analysts that Pakatan Rakyat (PR) was to blame for the Najib administration’s backtracking, and alleged that illegal bookmakers had spent between RM100 million and RM300 million to smear his attempt to introduce above-board football betting.

Oh really?

If this is so, then I have a beef to pick with these illegal bookmakers: Where’s my RM 1 million?!

After all I wrote such a nice article on the evil’s of betting, and who knows how many blog posts – surely worth something right? (faster contact me :)

I mean seriously, RM 100-300 million? I think this Vincent Tan fler is a bit perasaan.

Exactly what would these bookies spend that kind of money on? Promoting Old Town Kopitiam instead of Starbucks? :|

Noler, I think this is not a victory for illegal bookies, but for the rakyat.

Not only are we spared the scourge of more gambling, but we have probably stemmed some flow to Umno’s war chest. If we’re lucky, we have even created some friction between Vincent and Najib & gang.

So, here’s kudos to all those who have worked hard to uphold justice!

And now, who you betting on? Paraguay? Japan? Spain? Portugal? Take half ball? ahaha…

I suppose I’m unlikely to successfully avoid talking on the topic, so let’s see.

I’m going to be honest and say that my first reaction to the switch was a bit weird.

Having two somewhat parallel chains of command is not really the way I would go about things.

What are the implications regarding competing interests in the state? The signal it sends to PAS & DAP?

I have never been a fan of the Star, and I daresay today’s headline is misleading, but to cry bloody murder and expect them to have treated this issue kindly and with kids gloves is perhaps not the most… reasonable. What would one expect, after all?

I might not agree 100% with every single point, but I think much of what Kian Ming wrote today is relevant and not too far off the mark. Note his ending.

Sigh.

All that said, I suppose the deed is done.

I aspire to sufficient humility to say that maybe the bosses have it right.

Who knows? Maybe this will really take a whole bunch of headaches of the MB’s hands, allowing both men to thrive and focus on the areas best suited to them.

Wallahu’alam.

Zunar at the press conference we held together

I wanted to offer my ‘condolences’ to Zunar, having just read the news:

The Home Ministry has banned a Malaysiakini book by popular cartoonist Zulkifli Anwar Ulhaque, or better known as Zunar, under the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984.

In addition to Zunar’s ’1Funny Malaysia’ – which is published by Kinibooks, a subsidiary of Malaysiakini – two other comics were also banned.

Home Ministry secretary-general Mahmood Adam said the ban was issued following the contents in the three publications that were deemed unsuitable and undesirable for public reading.

In a statement issued today, Mahmood said the book banned was titled ‘Perak Darul Kartun’ and the two comics titled ‘Isu Dalam Kartun’ and ’1Funny Malaysia’.

Unsuitable and undesirable?

Yeah, maybe if you’re BN and planning to stay in power forever >:(

It was very recently, that our friend Najib said:

In his speech titled “A New Vision for Malaysia”, the Prime Minister made clear that he was not opposed to dissent or opposition because he believed legitimate views deserved to be heard.

I think the PM’s hypocritical definition of legitimate is at best, laughable, and at worst fiendishly self-serving.

It remains to be seen what will happen with my own publication, Where is Justice – but perhaps best you get a copy now before it meets a similar fate.

This banning is a shameful act of cowardice, and I hope Zunar knows that we are behind him all the way!

Let’s talk gambling again today.

I love how Rais Yatim thinks gambling is ok, but that Twitter will corrupt the soul of the nation.

He goes on about how the proceeds can be used to fund social welfare for non-Muslims.

Since when has the government been known to spend on the social welfare of either Muslims or non-Muslims?

If they were concerned about our economic well being, perhaps they could rethink these subsidies cuts, or better yet, maybe not pay Razak Baginda’s company hundreds of millions to maintain submarines that don’t submerge.

Maybe, taking a cue from the Queen of England, we might decide we don’t need RM 800 million for a new palace.

Unsurprisingly, Utusan Malaysia columnists are instead taking a cue from Nazri:

THE Chinese in Malaysia share a common culture with their counterparts all over the world.

Gambling is one of their favourite customs. So much so, as we have seen in this country, you will find them gambling till dawn, even at funerals.

Oh come on. Let’s not use “Chinese culture” as an offensive and lame excuse, when we all know the reason is “Najib’s via Vincent Tan’s insatiable greed”.

Seeing all the soldiers go all out on this issue gives an indication of how desperate Najib and gang must be.

Clearly directives have been sent out to push this somewhat unpopular line – just like subsidies cuts.

Given the palaces and submarines, we can only conclude that while Najib loves to play with his image as a reformist (PKR rip off) and kitty kat lover, all he is really thinking of is how he can keep the wheels of corruption, patronage and pork barrel politics nicely oiled, so that him and his can go on lining their pockets with our money.

ps- Hillarious article by @junewow on TMI :)

I really wonder what to make of all these alleged JI threats.

On the one hand, of course we want to be wary against the type of terror attacks we have seen in Indonesia and the like.

On the other, do we really trust our government when they start going on about such terror threats?

I won’t pretend to know for sure, but observe the style of these ‘witch hunt’ briefings -

Another high-level briefing was held at the Bukit Aman federal police headquarters last night as part of efforts to send out the red alert amongst the government’s senior echelon on the Jemaah Islamiah (JI) threat.

Apart from the movement’s terrorist threat, participants at the briefing also heard that JI subscribed to Wahhabism, an ultra-conservative, hardline form of Islam. This sparked fear among some present that a witch-hunt may be on the cards.

The high-ranking officials attending the meeting – among them the police task force on terrorism, public university vice-chancellors and heads of security departments – were clearly uneasy with what they heard.

This due to the deputy director of the Al-Quran and Core Knowledge of Institut Latihan Islam Malaysia, Zamihan Mat Zin who alleged a link between Wahhabism and several notable Islamic figures in the country.

Among the names mentioned were former Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidi, the state’s current mufti Juanda Jaya, former Perlis menteri besar Shahidan Kassim and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

I can see it now – dark room in Bukit Aman, figures huddled around a small table, one small overhead lamp, while one man goes on and on about these devils and their many co-conspirators.

Exactly the type of thing that would precede an Ops Lalang type of operation.

Perhaps this whole JI thing is manufactured to fit two goals:

Firstly, to appease America and their never ending anti-terrorism campaign (Najib lovessss America. During the Gaza flotilla crisis, Umno didn’t even dare to protest outside the American Embassy – choosing the UN instead :P )

Second of course, to conveniently get rid of political enemies.

Perhaps Najib is using his carrot and stick again against Asri – join Umno, or be arrested as a JI sympathist. Tsk3.

Let us be vigilant, Malaysia!

YB Sivarasa posed a simple question to the government: Was Nasir Safar was in a blue Proton Wira outside the home of defence analyst Abdul Razak Baginda on the night of Oct 19, 2006?

The government’s answer:

Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein has denied involvement of another individual linked to Prime Minister Najib Razak in the murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu.

“Based on police investigations, there is no mention of the individual (Nasir) or suspect in the murder of Altantuya,” said Hishammuddin in a written parliamentary reply to R Sivarasa (PKR-Subang).

:|

This reminds me of Uncle Ong, under whom I used to play a little squash. One of his favourite quips was: I show F, you see K.

Their utter and absolute failure to give a straight answer to a straight question can only raise alarm bells in the likes of me.

If Nasir Safar wasn’t there, why doesn’t the government come out and say so.

If he was there, WTF was Najib Razak’s aide doing there?!

A busy morning alas, forgive me as merely reprint a statement released while I was travelling, speaking to the mistreatment once again of migrant workers.

STOP PENALIZING WORKERS WHO WANT TO GET JUSTICE
- MAXTER GLOVE SHOULD REINSTATE BURMESE MIGRANT
WORKER WHO COMPLAINED TO LABOUR DEPARTMENT

We, the undersigned 66 organizations, groups and networks, concerned about migrant and worker rights, are appalled at the treatment of workers at Maxter Glove Manufacturing Sdn Bhd (229862-H), at its factory at Lot 6070, Jalan Haji Abdul Manan, 6th Miles off Jalan Meru, Klang, Selangor, Malaysia.

We are appalled at the dismissal of Thu Maung, a Burmese migrant worker, who courageously lodged a complaint at the Labour Department to claim his rights as a worker. Claiming worker rights by lodging complaints against errant employers at the Labour Department is the proper and legally recognized procedure in Malaysia. It is very wrong for employers to discriminate against and/or terminate workers who are exercising their legal rights. It is also wrong for employers to discourage and/or threaten workers from seeking justice, when worker rights are being violated.

ps- hillarious posts today re: Soi Lek, kuey teow and hotels, haha – http://twitter.com/NatAsasi/jw

Today, we celebrate the birth of @junewow of JuneWow.com! hooray!! :)

Muhyiddin:

“Every component party must administer their party effectively and enhance changes quickly so that BN’s image will remain intact,” he told reporters.

Muhyiddin said the transformation was important and necessary because the eco-system and political landscape of the country has changed because the public are now knowledgeable and well informed.

You gotta love it… BN must change because….. the public are now knowledgeable and well informed??

Enhance changes quickly so image remains intact??

Tsk tsk, that really is a very frank admission that for all these years (while the public was presumably ‘ignorant’ and ‘uninformed’), BN has been stealing from us, beating us up, locking us away, and stealing from us some more.

It’s good they’re acknowledging the need for change, but are they capable of change? Hmmm.
