I cannot help but also take a swing at the BN Selangor convention (pls pardon the lack of links, a bit in a rush – maybe add later).

In truth, I think this is perfectly emblematic of the multiple personality disorder of BN under Najib.

In the space of a single convention, with “BN Mampu Berubah” blazed in large print on the stage, we see both liberal leanings about how Umno can’t go it alone, from someone speaking on a stage where only Umno leaders are allowed to sit – MCA, MIC, (I think Gerakan’s new acronym should be “etc”, ahaha) had to sit down there with the rest of the plebes.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, we have two Umno Selangor bigshots – one happily singing the 1Malaysia tune, the other yapping on about how non-Malays should be grateful for their citizenship :|

Haiyo! How old does this Noh Omar have to be to be blabbing on and on about this? How in goodness gracious do they expect to win Selangor back by playing dinosaur politics?

I think we should get a video clip of him saying that and just play it non-stop in Hulu Selangor.

Najib, incidentally, is the BN/Umno chairperson for Selangor. If he cannot keep hardliner dissidents of his 1Malaysia plan in check even in one state, how is he going to really stay true to 1Malaysia throughout.. well, Malaysia?!

Between the Umno song, the stage seating, and those ridiculous citizenship comments, MCA and MIC were understandably pissed, reaffirming what everyone but themselves knows – that they are but lapdogs.

I dunno about you, but I’m seeing signs of a crumbling coalition. Trapped in an outdated racial mode that just doesn’t work.

ps- Just a super late point to this very kind review of Where is Justice? done by A Bookaholic. I was inspired by the small effect the book managed to have, and this really makes it worth it for me and John.. Thank you! If you haven’t yet, check out how you can get a copy!

Just a quick note about the nonsense exposed at the Kugan trial. Can’t write long right now, but observe:

We have top cops saying the safety of detainees is not their responsibility, we have cops saying they witnessed beatings but did little to stop it & claiming Kugan had ‘no complaints’, and we have cops giving conflicting and confusing testimony.

All to find out whether just one cop was guilty or not.

I think these are all symptoms of a cover-up. If the case really was uncovering the truth, then I doubt we would see such confusion and inconsistencies.

If we do not get justice for Kugan in the courts, I hope we will at least transform the institutions that are empowered to reform those courts.

The APCO war escalates. Anwar to be censured on the 22nd (a move that can result in his suspension from Parliament), YB Karpal is the first 10-day casualty, while YB Mahfuz Omar the second casualty to meet a similar fate as Anwar.

All Mahfuz did was chant “Umno APCO” – demonstrating not only the clear bias of our Speakers once again, but the absolute paranoia of Umno – berani kerana betul, takut kerana salah: they know they’re in hot soup with this APCO issue.

I have also read with great interest this Bukit Aman expose, which we shall follow with interest.

What is Najib’s/BN’s only defense so far? That 1Malaysia is not related to 1Israel.

To be honest, I don’t myself know how much 1Malaysia has to do with 1Israel.

However, let’s not miss the forest for the trees. 1Malaysia/Israel aside, there’s more to be concerned about, regarding APCO. Last time, I wrote about the Shin Bet connection, today: APCO’s shocking client list – a list Najib is now joining.

The most prominent cases include former Nigerian dictator General Sani Abacha, most famed for being held responsible for executing activist Ken Saro Wiwa and others like him who tried to defend their native lands from pollution and exploitation resulting from unbridled oil exploration.

Abacha is also estimated to have siphoned off some RM 10 billion via corruption during his reign, putting him as the 4th most corrupt leader in the world.

Sounds like someone who’d need a public relations firm, no? Sounds like APCO fit the bill perfectly.

Does this mean Najib needs APCO for similar reasons?

Who else is on this ‘esteemed’ client list?

We have Narendra Modi, the chief minister of Gujarat and member of ultra right wing chauvinist (sound familiar) party, the BJP.

Modi is infamous for failing to prevent severe Muslim-Hindu clashes that claimed the lives of thousands. It is said he turned a blind eye to the violence in some tacit approval of the murderous cycle of revenge between the majority Hindu and Muslim minority.

The US cited him for violations of international religious freedoms and subsequently denied him a visa to the US.

Guess who Modi thereafter hired to ‘repair’ his damaged image?

Does this mean Najib is also requiring some serious image repair?

We aren’t done with dictators yet. Check out Nursultan Nazarbayev – a man who altered the constitution of Kazakhstan so that he (and only him) was exempt from a provision limiting the number of terms an individual could serve as President.

(This means that legally he – Nazarbayev and Nazarbayev alone – could serve as President for life, but no one else).

Kazakhstan is rife with repressions that sound familiar to us: curtails of political freedoms, restrictions the press, and even assassinations.

APCO does considerable work in America as well, where they shamelessly serve the interests of tobacco companies (trying to argue that: oh no, smoking isn’t reaaaallly bad for your health :P and other large corporations. They have lead a campaign called Tort Reform, which seeks to weaken laws that protect average citizens against giant corporations.

These are the company in which our PM now finds himself. If I were him, I’d be more than a little ashamed.

I think this is serious cause for us to ask ourselves: why is our government paying RM 23 million to a company that is clearly more than cosy with the Zionists they claim to hate? A company that is involved up its neck with dictators and political scum that no one with the slightest semblance of integrity would want to be associated with?

I posit that this constant obsession with only one small facet of the case: whether APCO = 1Israel = 1Malaysia, is undeniable proof that all the other accusations about APCO and its involvement with our government are true.

I am not particularly interested in who came up with the 1Malaysia idea – it is after all, anything but original.

The important questions are: who APCO really is, whose interests they represent, and what hiring them (by virtue of the clientele APCO typically serves) reveals about the integrity of our government.

Jawablah, YAB Najib!!

Oh, I had quite a fun time :) I enjoy sketch comedy as much as I find it hard to both write it and/or write about it.

I think suffice to say I nearly fell off my chair laughing :) Lotsa current events are satired and satired well (I think there was one joke about Najib that literally only I got – I laughed really loudly a few seconds after the joke, and everyone was staring at me :P :) and the whole thing was just really entertaining.

There were awesome ‘products’ (like Bangladeshis) for sale, S&M, rapping durian planters, crazy Arabs, etc etc. Be forewarned, lotsa raunchy bits and good looking people (which arguably go well together :P ) – the sketch with the three ladies in kebaya *may* have gotten me a little hot and bothered :| ahaha..

Oh, and just for kicks :) -

TMI:

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak claimed tonight that he has put his political career on the line by committing to purging rent-seeking and patronage politics in Malaysia’s economy.

He said this is because those who benefit from these practices are powerful and politically connected, and he hinted that they could even exert their influence in Umno, the party of which he is president.

Najib, who has made needs-based instead of race-based affirmative action an important plank of his administration, said that his approach has put him in a “dangerous” position.

Wah!!! So noble ar?!?!

My goodness, be careful you don’t pengsan from being overwhelmed by our PM’s sacrifice and goodness :P

Haiyo, have you ever heard anyone tok so much kok before?

Firstly, don’t pretendla – everyone knows that without Pakatan’s victory, we’d still be talking NEP – not “NEM”.

My favourite part is this: Najib talks as if he is some outsider reformist, who has come out from the wilderness, as innocent and untainted as a saint, to bring Obama-esque change and purity to a tainted system.

Tokkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk kok lah!

Najib is the epitome of the establishment. His trying to paint himself as anti-establishment reformist makes me want to choke blood.

How could anyone believe that Najib – a man who *IS* the very definition of patronage, rent-seeking, and vested interests – might possibly be serious about reform?

The man who was once Malaysia’s youngest MP and son of a PM trying to sound like he’s fighting those with “political connections”? The man whose hands are so sullied with multi billion submarine and fighter jet deals now wants to talk about fighting corruption? The man who once threatened to bathe his keris in Chinese blood is now all 1Malaysia? Pooooodah!

I mean, this is quality APCO spin-doctoring, but even the best spin doctors in the world cannot hide the truth.

That truth is that Najib – almost more than anyone alive – is not only one and the same with the party he is now pretending to distance himself from; he – having stuck with Umno through thick and (the rare) thin – bears more responsibility than almost anyone else for making it what it is, and propagating the culture he so ‘boldly’ now speaks out against.

I have 2.5 simple words for our PM: Don’t blufflah!!

I think with the dropping of MAFREL as independent election-observers by the EC, we are looking at some hard core cheating by BN down at Hulu Selangor.

This moves reminds me most vividly of BN’s actions just before March 8th, where they cancelled the use of indelible ink to prevent repeat/phantom voters.

I think in that case, it signalled a clear sign of desperation, given the feedback they must have gotten from the ground (think SB) about voter inclinations and trends leading into the last few days.

Thus, I take this as a good sign – one which may very well mean the winds are on our backs!

Of course, it also means we have to work doubly hard to prevent and compensate for massive cheating on the part of BN and the EC!

On another semi-interesting note, observe the language at the BN Selangor convention:

“BN cannot stick to narrow racial ideology. BN cannot use old methodology to address new problems,” convention chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed declared to some 1,500 BN grassroots leaders from across the Pakatan Rakyat-controlled (PR) state.

“Umno for example must not only talk about the Malays and Islam but must also fight for the Chinese, Indians and others; it’s the same with MCA, MIC, Gerakan and PPP. we have to be ahead of the times,” said Mohd Zin who is also the Sepang Umno division chief.

“If we continue to fan racial sentiment, we will not be able to recapture Selangor,” said Mohd Zin.

“The people will continue to doubt us if BN keeps rejecting reality, and is slow in reforming,” said Mohd Zin.

Once again, this is the benefit of true political competition.

It’s good that some in BN can see the writing on the wall, but as I wrote last: are they too trapped to really change?

I for one found the backdrop to this picture really funny:

I think it is less “BN Mampu Berubah” than it is “BN terpaksa berubah kerana Pakatan” :P :)

I guess everyone’s seen this video by now :P :) fun eh?

The other major headlines are about Najib, Muhyiddin, and 1(st)Malay/sia.

I think we are witnessing nothing less than the struggle between being mired in outdated racial politics, and moving forward into more holistic, progressive visions for Malaysia.

Let’s start by analysing Muhyiddin’s interest in all this. What stunt was he trying to pull?

My view is that Muhyiddin’s impatience and greediness is starting to become startlingly apparent.

This PM-DPM relationship seems to more closely resemble Dr. M – Anwar (back in the day), which is essentially the exact opposite of Abdullah – Najib.

Najib was the quiet good boy, who bided his time even when people clamoured for Abdullah’s throat.

Muhyiddin? He seems to have his daggers out even before his boss has warmed his seat.

Now let’s examine the game he’s trying to play. Seeing Najib take a risky position with 1Malaysia, he decides to swing to the right, and pander to the Perkasa crowd – looking to differentiate himself from Najib any way he can.

I find him a man of low principle. I remember while Abdullah was PM, Muhyiddin was Mr. Multi-racial (one day I’ll dig up that news article). Now, when it suits him better, he’s Mr. Malay 1st in opposition to Najib’s Mr. 1M’sia.

This is lame. As is Najib tripping over himself to say that Muhyiddin’s position is consistent with 1Malaysia – which a donkey could see is a lie. I think this paints Najib as weak, liable to be bullied by his deputy.

Najib’s defensiveness of “not extreme” Perkasa also betrays his deep insecurity. Clearly he has no intent on taking a stance against racist hardliners like Ibrahim Ali – demonstrating time and again that for Najib, principle falls sacrifice to political expediency.

I have argued one very simple point in this blog, almost since I started it: genuine ideological reform within Umno is pretty much impossible, because of the way it has shaped itself over time.

After decades of building itself around the idea of Ketuanan Melayu, they are essentially trapped – victims of the race-obsessed mindsets they have worked so hard to create.

(I can’t help repeating: Perkasa and Umno always says the Malays have yet to achieve their full potential. I agree. But after decades of being ruled by Umno and no one else – exactly who is to blame for that state of affairs? Oh I don’t know, maybe the Umno ‘flers who stole everything that was meant for the bumiputeras?)

Especially in the last quarter of the last century, Umno has indoctrinated so many race-mongers (think BTN) and attracted so many sycophants, that they now find they can’t shake them loose – even if they wanted to (which is itself doubtful).

In mathematics, the sign “≡” means “always equals to” or “is defined as”.

My contention is that Umno ≡ racism (and corruption) ≡ Perkasa.

As for Najib’s attempts to cover Umno (or himself, seeing as he can now pretend he is more popular than Umno itself) with 1Malaysia, NEM, GTP, etc etc, all I can say is: you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.

Sorry it comes a bit late, but Happy Easter :)

Sorry this is late, but going on all weekend at the places below, voter registration by Do Something Epic! This is how you change Malaysia – it’s the very least any one of us can do! :)

Date: 3rd & 4th April 2010
Time: 10am to 10pm
Location: Cineleisure Damansara, Amcorp Mall & Subang Parade

First things first, to clear all doubts and suspicion, neither EPIC for UNITY or Voice your Choice are tools of any political party. We are strictly non-partisan and not affiliated with any political parties. We have found out that many people cannot comprehend this but YES, we are SINCERELY doing this because we realize as youths we need to take up our responsibility to make our nation something we can all be proud of.  Nation development is rather tricky and even though we youths are anxious to make a difference we dare not say we can do it without the wiser more experienced generation. Therefore, all who have asked if there is an age limit or if you are TOO OLD? The answer is NO there is no age limit to dreams.

Voice you Choice is created by youths for ALL Malaysians

This is what it is all about…
This is not about PR or BN or any political parties
This is not about overthrowing the government
This is where corporate and political rivals can work together to meet a common need
This is where our faiths unite regardless of religion
This is about uniting all Malaysians for Malaysia
This is where we obtain the peace that comes from within and is not driven by our environment or circumstance. Peace is with those who can wake up every morning knowing they have done everything to the best of their abilities in making this country a better place.
This is about conquering ourselves, finding our voice and believing that it counts, only then can we know that this government, nation and world will be cured of the diseases that plague it.
This is about using a new yard stick to measure another fellow human, not by his race, status, and profession or academic achievement, but by the same believe that we want a better future and Equality for all.
The marker of success will be met when we successfully organize ourselves as one people, as organizations, and individuals.  When we hit the 2 million mark, only then do we know that we have conquered our past and became one Rakyat.
We learn from our past but are never haunted by it. We are dedicated and committed to using our present to shape our future. Join us!

I think we may be on to something big here. I suggest you start with Tian’s 2 articles, here and here.

As what will hopefully be part of a multi-part series (sorry in advance if you get sick of it), let me start with the Shin Bet connection.

Shin Bet = Shabak = Israel Security Agency (ISA, ironically) = the Israeli internal spying agency = Israel’s Special Branch (but if you can imagine, even worse).

I think I too must add the obligatory “this is not anti-Semitic” preamble. Like many of us who studied in the US, we have tons of great Jewish friends, and have long learnt to differentiate between Jew and Zionist.

Especially after researching the Shin Bet however, I think there is even less doubt as to some of the repressive tendencies of the Israeli government.

First, let us establish the Shin Bet connection to APCO (APCO’s involvement w/the government, we must note, has been established beyond doubt).

It starts here, with a member of APCO’s Advisory Board, a man named Doron Bergerbest-Eilon:

Doron Bergerbest-Eilon is the former head of the protection and security division and the senior ranking security official of the Israeli Security Agency (ISA), a position equivalent to the rank of major general. Mr. Bergerbest-Eilon is the founder, president and CEO of ASERO Worldwide, where he advises clients on strategic and tactical security challenges and provides assistance to both governments and corporations to prepare, mitigate and recover from threats of terrorism and other hazards; and to protect lives and critical assets and ensure continuity of operations.

Someone with the connections of an ex-Major General of the Israeli Defense Forces? And CEO of which company again? ASERO? Back to Tian:

Apco’s involvement in various intelligence and security-related projects is done through its strategic partner and sister company Asero Worldwide. While Apco’s expertise is in the field of communications, Asero specialises in homeland security and risk management consultancy.

Apco and Asero have many overlapping consultants and management members. For example, Doron Bergerbest-Eilon who sits on Apco’s International Advisory Council was also founder and president of Asero Worldwide.

Mara Hedgecoth, the daughter of Apco CEO and President Margery Kraus also sits in Asero as Vice President. At the same time, Mara Hedgecoth also serves as Vice President and Director in Apco Worldwide.

The connection between APCO and ASERO is fully public. The only other company mentioned on ASERO’s About Us page:

ASERO is a partner company with APCO Worldwide, an independent, majority employee-owned global communication consultancy.

Let’s leave most of the details about ASERO for another post – suffice to say that they are clearly being run by the same people; practically part of the same holding company / mafia. Let’s just start very simply with ASERO’s Management Team.

David Harel
Managing Director and Vice President, Israel
Former head of international relations for the protection and security division of the Israeli Security Agency

Oded Raz
Vice President
Former senior ranking security official of the Israeli Security Agency

Gadi Kalai
Director
Former regional security manager (RSO) of the Israeli Security Agency (ISA)’s north region

That’s a company run by four top ranking Shin Bet officials. I think it’s time we hear a bit about Shin Bet, aka Shabak. To Wikipedia:

Shabak also extracts information by interrogating suspects. In 1987, after complaints about excessive use of violence in interrogations of Palestinian prisoners, the Landau Committee (headed by a former Supreme Court Justice Moshe Landau) prepared a two-part report on Shabak’s interrogation methods. Only one part was made public. It revealed that the Shabak regularly used violent methods of interrogation and that Shabak agents were tutored to lie in court about how evidence was uncovered. The committee report also gave guidelines for future interrogations, but most of the details were in the secret part of the report. The open part revealed that the guidelines allowed Shabak to apply “moderate physical pressure” in the case of “necessity”. In 1994, State Comptroller Miriam Ben-Porat, in a report not made public until February 2000, found that during 1988–1992, “Violation of the Landau Commission and the GSS regulations continued to be widespread in the interrogation facility in Gaza and, to some extent, in other facilities.… Veteran and senior investigators in the Gaza facility carried out severe and systematic violations. Senior GSS commanders did not prevent these violations.”[2]

In 1999, the Israeli Supreme Court heard several petitions against Shabak methods. It found that these included: (1) “forceful and repeated shaking of the suspect’s upper torso, in a manner which causes the neck and head to swing rapidly,” (2) manacling of the suspect in a painful “Shabach position” for a long period of time, (3) the “frog crouch” consisting of “consecutive, periodical crouches on the tips of one’s toes,” and other methods. The Court ruled that Shabak did not have the authority, even under the defense of “necessity,” to employ such methods.[3]

In the Justice Ministry, the Department For Special Roles, there is a senior investigator who checks complaints about Shabak interrogations.[citation needed] Shabak claims that it is now basing its interrogations only on psychological means[citation needed]. However, organizations such as B’Tselem and Amnesty International still accuse Shabak of employing physical methods that amount to torture under international conventions.[4][5]

Harassment and detentions

Salah Haj Yihyeh, an Israeli who runs mobile clinics for Physicians for Human Rights, was detained for questioning by the Shin Bet. In the questioning, Yihyeh answered questions about the activities of the organization, its budget, the identity of its donors, and details about others employed by PHR. The board of Physicians for Human Rights, in a letter to Shin Bet chief Yuval Diskin, rejected the “crossing of a red line in a democracy.” The letter argued that since the only cause for calling an employee of the group was to scare him, the tactics were unacceptable and illegal.[13]

Palestinian journalist Mohammed Omer was detained in July 2008 by Shin Bet. Having arrived on a flight from London, Omer says that he was taken aside by a Shin Bet official. According to Democracy Now! Omer was later questioned, strip-searched, and then beaten by eight armed Shin Bet officers. Injuries from the ordeal allegedly left Mohammed Omer in the hospital for a week.[14]

Whoa. What kind of monsters are we dealing with here? (and this is just people linked to APCO. we haven’t started talking about APCO’s list of clients yet).

*

For a government that loves nothing more to slam Zionists and Israelis, we sure are getting cosy with a lot of them.

Next on APCO – the dubious clientele they serve.
