Najib fears local elections, refuses to empower rakyat

Looks like Najib is wasting no time in the question of local elections.

“We feel it will increase politicking in the local (govt) level.

“We want to improve services for the rakyat. By having the (local government) election, the focus will be more on the political process.

“Those contesting will be more focussed on campaigning,” he told reporters after attending the National Civil Service Convention here Tuesday.

What idiocy.

This represents a fundamental disrespect for the ideals of democracy.

If there is ‘too much’ focus on the political process, why bother with freakin’ elections at all?? Might as well become dictator for life, which will of course give you all the time in the world to focus on ‘improving services’ for the rakyat right?

(I think in Najib’s case, he’s more keen on being serviced by the rakyat :P )

Yes, democracy is flawed and people sometimes spend too much time worrying about votes. But there is a reason people remember Churchill’s “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others”.

The essence of democracy is competition and choice – the empowering of the rakyat to remove their leaders. Without true democracy, power and impunity (and what impunity we have in Malaysia) continue to corrupt absolutely.

At its best, local elections ensures competitiveness in service delivery, in which as always the consumer benefits the most.

So Dtk Najib, you can take your cronyism and tyranny and shove it.

ps- Why did we stop local elections in the first place?

Local government elections were first held in 1951 before Merdeka but abolished in 1965 during the Confrontation with Indonesia.

The then Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman promised it would be restored after the situation improved.

Yes, and unless I’m very much misinformed, I do believe Konfrontasi is over? Denial of local elections is becoming like the NEP and the ISA – dinosaurs meant for another time.

    Hi NAT,

It be good if you can elaborate & tell us all what is LOCAL ELECTION. What good & bad does it bring & all the bla, bla, bla.

I ain’t any politic expert & it would be good if you can help clarify/explain on it.

The reason for having Local government election is to give the power back to the People, the focus is restoring TRUE DEMOCRACY.
And doing so will improve services for the People as those who stand for office will have to strive to perform.

Yet Najib feels “it will increase politicking”. Yes, that’s because he is already thinking of spending money to run for office & more ideas & time to trick the People instead of working on the local issues. He is the Head honcho who will be more focused on campaigning, not the rest of us.

His crappy PR-1Malaysia campaign, 1BTN, National Service and what not are perpetual year long campaigns that divert both financial and people resources from school programs, medicinal needs, help for orang asli & overall poverty reduction. If he really want to perform, just scrap these propaganda and get the resources to schools & public hospital/clinics. But I can tell you his interest is only for thy self, not the People. Up his People first, performance now! It’s Najib & Rosmah first, Performance to look good in the news!!! Screw Him!!!

    Hi NAT,

I’ve read CHARLES HECTOR’s blog where he explains Local Elections clearly. Thus, herewith are my comments:

This is POLITICS & politics is all about sustaining and empowering the ones in-charges. This is the way the game is played (like it or not)

Although on ‘the rakyat’ behalf, we crave for People’s Power whereby ‘the rakyat’ rule the country but honestly would this bring more advantages than disadvantages?

If we were to give too much power to ‘the rakyat’, I foresee the country will go into some kind of chaos. Everybody will want to have a say in everything & sometimes ‘one rakyat’ suggestions goes into clash with another suggestion given by another so-called ‘rakyat’. Thus, all this will slowly snowball into an effect whereby our beloved country will lose out in many ways because everybody will be overly enthusiastic over the newly found ‘People’s Power’. This will also result the ‘Government of the day’ to have many difficulties in implementing any developments simply because there are too many RED TAPES with the existence of Local Elections (e.g.) Local councilors in Pakatan Rakyat led States objecting BN’s implementation & vice-versa.

In order for a country to progress, we need to have a solid party leading it. When there’s too many entity ruling/influencing the country, conflicts will be inevitable resulting delays in all aspects of progress & developments. Take a look at our current political scenario whereby we have BN & Pakatan Rakyat. It’s only 2 entities but the problems seems to be NEVER ENDING resulting in no whatsoever progress to the country in any aspect.

Imagine if we create one more entity (Local Elections), it will be even worse. I reckon to wait for the time whereby only 1 ruling party becomes absolutely strong over the other (either BN or PR), only then ‘Local Elections’ are to be held.

Implementing Local Elections during such a messy time will NOT bring any good but only to create more mess in our current political scene.

What total crap this TOKZ is writing… developed countries around the world practice matured democracy where local elections are held on top of state and federal elections. All of these countries also have a strong two-party system in work whereby only the party that is truly sincere in serving the people and bringing the country to better future win and the people have all the rights and avenue to throw out self-serving politicians if they are not performing. All these chaos that we are having now with 2 coalitions are caused by BN who refused to recognize people’s power and a valid opposition, and that they continue to plough on the people and persecute elected opposition reps using state and federal vehicles including the police, the judiciary, the EC, the MACC and even the Royalty.

Having only 1 single strong party controlling all state/federal institutions with absolute power will turn Malaysia into another Zimbabwe or Myanmar. Are these the type of “stable country” you desire?

I think local council elections are good because when they are appointed by the people they have to work for the people or get booted out.Definitely when the rakyat call the shots they will get better service. Now the civil service is appointed by the people in power and they sometimes treat us very arrogantly.

A dictator govt. would not want this dilution of their powers because they want to impose their will upon the people to serve them. In a sham democracy the govt will try to clamp down on any voices of dissention.

  • Not clever

We support the PM’s views because he knows that we are not clever enough to know what si right or wrong and we can make mistakes. He knows what’s good for us we must trust him.

TOKZ is like UMNO saying that the public does not know what it wants. Of course there will be conflicting views and opinions. That is democracy and the government works through debates and convincing arguments. The rakyat then decides who has a more convincing argument.

Wow!! I am seeing miracles happening before my eyes!!! This nut case TOKZ can read and write English!! Hallelujah!!!

CMs LGE and Khalid can do it. No need to depend on the federal government nor its bias running-dog Erection Commission. Just do it. You don’t need the anti-People EC to achieve what needs to be achieved.

    Power to the People!

    have local council/govt elections.

have direct general elections (like taiwan and the usa). no more follow parliamentary seats. open to abuse like gerrymandering. have it like taiwan where each vote REALLY COUNTS.

in ge12, umno-barisan won 50+ % only of the popular votes but got nearly 2/3 of the seats. is this fair??????

come ge13, peninsular malaysia will fall to pakatan rakyat!!!!!!!!!

    kuburkan umno demi kesejahteraan malaysia.
