ps- this is lame, but I couldn’t help asking: seen my little caption contest entry yet? :P

Well, good gracious that’s quite a beating :P

Much can be said about this result and its implications. I want to concentrate on that which is within our power.

I hope this will be an opportunity for those of us within Pakatan to take stock of where the coalition is going.

I think so far, we have ‘ridden’ on the momentum of events like people falling out of buildings and stepping on cow heads – things that a) we should certainly not depend on for our political fortunes, b) are merely own goals scored by the other side.

I do believe that we have to step up our game, and transcend the poor quality of Malaysian politics.

I have argued time and again that internal strife is part and parcel of any political dynamic, and I accept that fact of life.

In Malaysia though, it does seem to be getting a bit out of hand – all across the board. It’s time to demand less pettiness, and more statesmanship.

For Pakatan, I believe the time has come for the component parties to put its eggs in the Pakatan basket, and not their own. I reckon this is the main factor that will determine (as I repeat for the millionth time) whether we sink or swim.

The rakyat – especially the ever precious middle ground – do not seem terribly interested in individual party ideologies. They just want to see a viable alternative to a corruption-ridden, racist BN.

If Pakatan does not step into this role, it is only a matter of time before Najib convinces the rest that with some PR image makeovers, BN can pretend to play that role and still quietly conduct business as usual behind the scenes.

Have they won this battle only to lose the war? It’s a nice, catchy thing to quote, but only you and I will determine the truth of it.

  1. In the case of Bagan Pinang, Isa is a major factor that confuses everyone – including both UMNO/BN and PR. It is a difficult case to draw much conclusion for both sides, especially for national context.

However, legitimisation of corrupt leaders by way of selecting Isa has helped to establish UMNO as a corrupt party for good.

So in the current case of Bagan Pinang, the electorate did not seem to be concerned with corruption as the number 1 issue, hence the outcome. But when it is, we know what outcome it will be. And that’s our hope.

  2. Hi Nat,

The results indeed ain’t shocking or amusing. Infact, it makes hell alot of sense.

Isa Samad could well be a corrupted man but this corrupted man can’t even be defeated by a suppossedly up-&-coming party called Pakatan Rakyat. Why is that so???

    ANSWER:
    1) Anwar Ibrahim on behalf of Pakatan Rakyat had made himself & his alliance a BIG FAT LIAR. The ‘916′ fairy tale which sounded so real had concluded to be a mere Bed Time story.

    2) PAS & DAP lied to the rakyat claiming they have sorted out their differences & they both are now best of brothers. However, the recent squabbles between these 2 parties in the public only made them look like FAT LIARS who are out to cheat the rakyat for vote/support.

    3) Bagan Pinang voters have no choice & this is TRUE. It’s either they vote for a corrupted man or they vote for a man who will be constantly instructed to LIE. This showed, Malaysians would rather prefer CORRUPTION instead of LIARS.

  3. “For Pakatan, I believe the time has come for the component parties to put its eggs in the Pakatan basket, and not their own”?

    How true.

But what say the likes of Hasan Ali and the two Nasharuddin’s – the PAS Deputy President and the PAS Youth chief?

Hasan seems to be more interested in an ultra-Islamic state agenda which some have said is a hypocrite’s heavily-personal-agenda driven attempt to win favour both with the ultra-Islamists and also certain parties in UMNO. Certainly he does not seem to care what PAS Shah Alam chief Khalid Samad says, much less what the Selangor MB Khalid Ibrahim and what Pakatan leader Anwar say. Apparently he even thumbed his nose at Hadi, so what chance is there that he cares about the listen to the views of the PKR / DAP members, and the views of the minorities in Selangor?

Where Pakatan’s image and chances of gaining the popular vote are concerned, he is a mega-liability in Selangor in particular, and in the nation in general. But does Hasan care? Indeed, there have been some who opine that he is working to undermine Pakatan’s chances for the sake of his own personal agenda. How true is that?

And the two Nasharuddins have certainly done their share of damage, so narrow minded has been their Islamic state agenda. Sink-or-swim come the next GE will depend on this critical factor.

PAS has a horrible history of having their eyes on the Islamic state to the exclusion of the rights of minorities and even the matter of keeping their word to DAP during a previous GE. Pakatan, and in particular Anwar’s tremendous skill managed to cotter together Pakatan Rakyat for GE 2008, and win over those who still had in mind PAS’ history. But no sooner had the GE 2008 dust settle than PAS revert back to its old tricks, including the UMNO-PAS talks which Hadi was so gung-ho on. Voters from the minorities are not the “mudah lupa” sort. We remember such antics.

What does PAS truly stand for? What will/can PAS do about the likes of Hasan and the Nasharuddins? Answer that satisfactorily, and convince the voters, or Pakatan will sink during the next GE. Not “may sink”, but “WILL sink”.

And you can be sure Najib and UMNO are well aware of that..

  4. To me..PAS candidate is also no angel or saint as he is align to Hassan who support the unity with UMNO & create trouble with Selcat in support for UMNO goons & cooruption.

  5. real smart voters….

In realty PAS cannot govern (state) even it wins. Also Federal is still BN. So, for this by-election, let’s vote for BN and get the ‘goodies’ and enjoy.

    But come GE13…

  6. Its no surprise that BN/UMNO won…as they are able to cheat & lie themselves up. They manage to corrupt rakyats mind that its normal practise to corrupt & to easily forgive UMNO goons.
Likewise rakyat are bought by over this uMNO corrupt style. Check for instances that TOKz also promote corruption as standard practie as he agreed is nothing wrong to vote for tainted candidate. Moreover voting for PAS is the same team that plans to unite with UMNO.

Such as you get better offer from the principal (UMNO) rather then trough agent (PAS candidate, friendly to UMNO). Who would u vote ..as both are UMNO & its mole. I go for UMNO for its $ returns at the end.

  7. How could we miss your cool caption contest entry? So witty of you. :D

Oh and dont worry Nat. It’s not lame as it is cheap.

  8. a blessing in disguise for Pakatan Rakyat..now they will have to work more harder as a team/coalition
    in confronting an awaken BN…

to all the DAP adun of NS….
this is a wake up call…
without the Malay vote DAP is nothing….next general election
NS DAP / West Malaysia will be totally wipe out unless the start approaching/engaging the Malays who are the majority in NS/Malaysia

  9. Just imagine the following….

PAS & Pakatan Rakyat can’t even defeat a supposedly corrupted man. Infact PAS & Pakatan Rakyat got SMASHED & BASHED to their grave instead by this supposedly corrupted man.

    What does this tell us???

ANSWER: PAS & Pakatan Rakyat is WORSE than a corrupted man. They’re DOOMED!!!

    Makes sense???

  10. Hi Sir,

Sad but true. It’s clear to see ‘the rakyat’ is slowly losing faith & confidence towards Pakatan Rakyat. The constant bickering among PR parties in the public had caused severe damage to PR’s dreams.

Moreover, ‘the rakyat’ perceive PR as “One Big Fat Liar”. The reasons being so are due to the following:

    1) Anwar Ibrahim & his 916 fairy tale. He spoke so much about it but only to end up as a Bed Time story.

    2) Prior to the last G.E., PAS & DAP claimed they have sorted out their differences & they’re now BROTHERS. However, the recent squabbles between these 2 parties had shown PAS & DAP are plain liars. They lied to the public regarding their relationship & they lied just to garner support. Well, they can give all sorts of excuses & lies but the truth indeed never hides!!!

    3) PAS says ‘NO’ the booze sales, while DAP says ‘YES’ to booze sales. Since PAS & DAP are from 1 family…..who is actually calling the shot??? They can’t even compromise a small issue behind closed door & this showed they had lied to the public since the last G.E.

    4) DAP’s Alternative Budget had given PAS & PKR a bad name. The arrogance & disrespectful behaviour of DAP in releasing their own Budget made Pakatan Rakyat looked like a BROKEN FAMILY with no whatsover rules, respect & protocol.

    5) Isa Samad may once be a corrupted man but this corrupted man can’t even be defeated by a supposedly up & coming party. What does this say??? Pakatan Rakyat is WORSE than a corrupted man.

    6) If given no choice, Bagan Pinang folks would rather vote & support CORRUPTION instead LIARS. With corruption, atleast the people gets a small chunk of it but with LIARS…..the people gets NOTHING except, lies, fairy tales, bed time stories, wayang kulit, drama minggu ini & bla, bla, bla.

  11. BAGAN PINANG POST MORTEM FINDINGS:

    1) For all the fuss about BN fielding a tainted leader & yet still won by a thumping majority showed Pakatan Rakyat simply doesn’t know how to capitalize on such advantage. This By-election by right should be a EASY WIN for Pakatan Rakyat due to all the bad image ISA SAMAD has.

    2) Pakatan Rakyat leaders, supporters & bloggers are a bunch of SORE LOSING kids who simply can’t accept reality & more importantly defeat.

    3) PAS, DAP & PKR are UNABLE to work together to form Pakatan Rakyat & this has proven in Bagan Pinang. Instead, they are now pushing the blame onto one another. Bunch of Puss wankers!!!

    4) CORRUPTION is indeed a better bet than LIES. Although ISA SAMAD is a corrupted fella but still Bagan Pinang folks prefer someone who is corrupted rather than a person representing a coallition of which is only capable of telling LIES, LIES & LIES (e.g.) Kampung Buah Pala fiasco, 916 fairy tale, etc.

    5) Due to the limitation of choices in the Bagan Pinang election (either a corrupted idiot or a wanker whose party is only capable of telling lies)…….Bagan Pinang voters know that via voting a corrupted guy; money & developments will still be given to Bagan Pinang.

    6) If Bagan Pinang voters voted-in the candidate from Pakatan Rakyat, the consequences would be extremely SEVERE. Instead of development & peruntukan, there will only be “lies, cerita donggeng, fairy tales, bed time stories, wayang kulit, drama minggu ini, etc.

    7) The release of DAP’s Alternative Budget had brought negative impact to Pakatan Rakyat in Bagan Pinang. DAP’s disrespectful behaviour of NOT consulting & getting approval from PAS & PKR before releasing their own Budget showed Pakatan Rakyat is facing BIG TIME CONFLICT. How can anybody vote a coallition who can’t even tame their family members?? (But yet these wankers wanna take-on bigger task) Pakatan Rakyat might as well have a BEGGAR to be their candidate.

    8) Non-Malay voters in Bagan Pinang are FED-UP with all the TALIBAN issues raised by PAS (Ban of booze sale, pig farm, etc).

    9) Malay voters in Bagan Pinang simply cannot agree & adpopt the TALIBAN style ruling of PAS. They prefer to have booze easily accessible to them & they encourage pig breeding due to their love for Bak Kut Teh. They can’t allow Bagan Pinang to be turned into Afghanistan.

    10) NAJIB is doing a GREAT JOB & his implementation of policies can only be regarded as FANTASTIC. Anwar Ibrahim is nowhere near NAJIB except for story telling of his infamous novels entitled “Pakatan Rakyat & their 916 fantasy” & “Macam mana nak cucuk buntut”

    11) Legally, PERAK is gone for Pakatan Rakyat. Next, will be SELANGOR. Thus come the next General Election…..the entire Malaysia will fall back to the MIGHTY BARISAN NASIONAL. Just can’t wait for this day!!!

    12) The reason why a Political Tsunami took place was due to the USELESS PAK LAH. Now that this idiot is gone & a NEW great leader is on the throne…….Pakatan Rakyat should be prepared to sing “Auld Lang Syne” & be labelled a ONE TERM WONDER (just like what Lim Kit Siang is predicting)

  12. There are many factors that had brought about this loss in Bagan pinang bye election. 1. The pakatan Rayaat were becoming over confident. 2. The PAS posture in Selangor causing unnecessary friction which is often highlighted by MSM. 3. The role of Makkal sakthi contributing significantly. 4. The BN election machinery was all out as this loss for BN will end UNMO’s supremacy. 4. The goodies promised by all the cabinet ministers were crucial in shifting, the raya open houses the deepavali goodies for the people in the ladangs made them vote for BN. In hindsight this loss for PAS will bring more positive approach as PAS has to work with other parties to win. PAS should use “PAS for ALL” and really should be seen to do more for others in this case Indians. On the other end it is now that BN must provide more goodies to the Indian community, since the indians have delivered their votes. Najib has promised to do much for Indians. He has the responsibility to deliver, falling which the Indians will not support him. More goodies must come in the form of govt jobs, better standard of living for the indians, schlarships for marginalised indians, overall better prospects. So the indians will benefit from this election.

  13. ***The affliction of Chinese Feng Shui in Pakatan Rakyat***

The problem within Pakatan Rakyat is indeed inevitable. It’s NOT becos’ of racial issues, different ideologies or any other factors.

The constant squabble & bickering within Pakatan Rakyat is indeed due to the affliction of the three official symbol of these 3 respective parties:

    1) DAP – ROCKET
    2) PAS – MOON
    3) PKR – MOON

If put ROCKET & MOON together, the conclusion is BAD NEWS!!!

ROCKET is known to constantly travel to the MOON & thus conquering MOON. As long as DAP is being placed together with PAS & PKR, we can be sure there will be NEVER ENDING problems. This is due to the Feng Shui impact of the ROCKET (DAP) constantly trying to OUT-DO & OUT PERFORM the MOON (PAS & PKR)

The only way for Pakatan Rakyat to excel is to ‘GET RID OF DAP FROM PAKATAN RAKYAT’.

DAP, PAS & PKR is a bad mixture for success!!!

  14. 5435 majority. Is it? A landslide victory for UBN Regime?

Corrupt Isa get: 8013 (-3521 postal he gets 4492)
Zul Pas get : 2578 (-601 postal he gets 1977)

If public vote conted (As we know how postal cast)

Isa corrupt get 4492 and Zul Pas get 1977.
    so 4492-1977=2515 majority only.
    2008 election majority is 2333. So 2515-2333=182

The UBN only gets 182 extra votes. Thats it.

  15. well, most malaysians are crooks. let’s put it this way.

let have more increase in the petrol price! more barang naik!!!
pls since rakyat like it so much.

  16. One of the important significance of Bagan Pinang’s result is urban, university educated and middle-class Malaysians will continue to shun BN, which means in due time, BN and UMNO especially will be the party of the people in the rural areas and the less-educated. PAS and PKR will continue to attract young and highly educated Malay professionals while UMNO will continue to have only those with second and third grade SPM results whose lives are wholly dependent on government contracts.

  17. To me, Bagan Pinang is more likely an anomaly than indicator of voting trends nationwide.

And Moon-Rocket Feng Shui? I think I’d better reserve my comments rather than offend those who believe in such matters.

Bagan Pinang was a do-or-die situation for Najib, what with the UMNO GA just a few days after the by-election and Pakatan winning 7 out of 8 previous by-elections since March 2008. Even Batang Ai is a questionable win for BN.

Najib was desperate enough to field a candidate who had already been found corrupt by his own party. No amount of “technical”, “second chance” rubbish can fool anyone, not even UMNO die-hards. But I think Najib had his back to the wall, pushed there by members of his own party who were threatening to boycott if Isa was not fielded.

Can you imagine Dr M ever allowing such rebellion, much less give in to the demands of the rebels? How weak does that show Najib to be within his own party?

Then there is the massive postal votes boost which benefitted Isa together with what Salahuddin reprtedly said was a different electoral roll being used. And despite the government saying about no campaigning by any party in military camps, Isa was still photographed shaking the hands of soldiers in one of the camps.

But the proven corrupt Isa did win against PAS’ Zulkefly.

No doubt, all the candies dished out made a large impact on the desparately poor rural Indians who formed about 20% of the electorate. Never mind that the goodies were paid for with the rakyat’s funds, and more importantly, the goodies were the Indians’ due in the first place. For folks who live with so little, anything like the windfall surely engenders gratitude. If i had been in their place, that’s what I’d probably have done.

And the Chinese? Even PAS’own campaign manager Salahuddin admitted today that the Chinese were teaching Pakatan/PAS a lesson. As a Chiness, I have already stated before my feelings about Hasan and the two Nasharuddins, and their ultra-Islamic state agenda, with the allegations about Hasan’s hidden personal agenda.

Then there is PKR’s infamous Zulkifli Nordin, with his continual lop-sided rantings.

DAP has also had its failings – I personally found Guan Eng’s handling of Kg Buah Pala highly incompentant, and his actions too alooft and proud. Jeff Ooi should also be more careful with his words and attitude. I cannot help but comparing these two with the humble but firm Nik Aziz.

Let’s not forget that many Malays still view such humility with great esteem. A lot of good, a lot of hard work and a lot of sacrifice can easily be undone by a few careless haughty words.

I cannot find reason to disagree with those who say that Pakatan’s 3 component parties have become too arrogant and over-confident, especially DAP and PAS.

Those who have voiced such opinions as me – that Pakatan needs to buckup or face disaster – are not alone. Kit Siang himself said essentially the same thing today.

But all that being said, I’d still place hope in Pakatan, that Anwar, Kit Siang and Nik Aziz can revamp the coalition back into a Pakatan every Malaysian can and should vote for.

Hopefully they’d give the likes of Hasan Ali, the two Nasharuddins, Zulkifli Nordin and Guan Eng stern dressing downs, and issue them ultimatums to toe the line, get their acts together, stop their nonsense, or GET OUT.

    As you yourself wrote, Nat,

“For Pakatan, I believe the time has come for the
component parties to put its eggs in the Pakatan
    basket, and not their own.”

  18. Appreciate your clear, calm, conscientious voice, Nat. I hope they take heed of what you’re saying.

  19. Ok… 5435. Good number to buy yah….!!!!

Anyway, this number is good enough to “WAKE UP” Pakatan…..!!!

Ever since certain states have been won by them, they “ARE NOT” working & behaving like team players…!!

Next GE we are screwed…! The rakyat only has BN & Pakatan to choose from.

    Any 3rd Force….???????

  20. How to vote for PAS for they would want to unite with UMNO. Once they unite with PAS they turn corrupt & liars.
take note…People not voting for PKR or neither DAP. Its all PAS. So the fault lies on PAS.
A lesson to PAS if they would want to unite or work along with UMNO.
Dont talk about internal squabble …BN component is much worst. I as voter not vote PAS as they didnt manage to convince us as sincere & not easily manipulate by the liars & corrupt UMNO.

  21. shall i said Pakatan have no vision, leadership and master plan, imagine what will happen if they do win GE13,chaos i can assured you…
