A Pakatan Shadow Cabinet! At long last!!
Hooray!! :)
Well, ok, it may not *exactly* be in the shape some of us imagined, as YB’s Azmin and Tony explained; but this is exactly the configuration I have always thought would be most practical, given the Pakatan context and dynamics.
Naming individuals as shadow ministers is a politically exhausting process. I think this alternative will allow Pakatan MPs to show that they have the calibre of ministers, and that they have better, concrete, alternative policy ideas.
The whole thing is all very interesting, but for now (beyond perhaps saying that I’m not thrilled about Zul Nordin), I’d just like to enjoy and bask in the fact that it merely exists :) This is a first for the country, and truly, a step forward for Malaysia.

It would be good to check first how many of the members of the Shadow Cabinet were “absent” during the vote on the DNA Bill recently!
Two PAS for kemetenterian pengajian tinggi??? Ya..ya ..one is in disguise.
nat.
instead of mimicking minister-for-minister, is there any leeway for pakatan to cut down redundant shadow ministries? for example, the education ministries could be merged into one shadow ministry.
it will also highlight a message by pakatan that they will not tolerate waste, and being a coalition of three parties, i don’t think pakatan has a need to appease everyone unlike the opposition with its fourteen(?) members.
Firstly, to ensure a strong and cohesive body, Pakatan Rakyat should register as a coalition party rather than working under a loose cooperation. PR should than stand as one party in the next election under one Logo and Banner. By doing so, voters would have more confident of PR’s commitment.
I believed many people are watching and having doubt about PR’s ability to run the Federal Government. With the current situation and Kedah as an example, one wonders if PR can last for one term. People’s perception is that if not for Anwar Ibrahim PR could have disbanded long time ago.
Hope PR would consider to register as one body so that a two-party system is no-longer just a dream but a dream come true.
Finally!
Oh, it’s nice having a 3-person team shadowing another 3-person team. Let’s see how this first round of experimentation works out.
A first for Malaysia indeed. And a great preparation for the change of federal govt, hopefully sooner than later.
To Goldee, I think we have to be realistic about the coalition – Mar 8 came as a (pleasant) surprise and the coalition needs time to build understanding, and confidence. The current setup seems the best. At least a positive, logical move.
I wanna be a playtime minister too please!
@Goldee
Malaysian electoral law I believe requires seven parties to form a coalition. PR can certainly get around this by forming dummy parties, but that would be a very messy solution.
As for these committees, I’m not sure they are the best way forward, with no single identifiable individual for policies, but I should withhold judgment.
cheers
it only shows one thing, PAkatan is still divided, divided enough to give everyone a share of the cake because they cannto work out a compromise package as to who should take care of each ministry..
kalau jadi gomen macamana ada 99 orang menteri ke???
PKR playing a joke on us or what? Instead of sacking Zulkifli Nordin they want make him a minister – and minister for higher education at that?
He will again claim to be a muslim first and minister last and you can imagine the chaos he will create in our institutions of higher learning when he takes charge.
This whole exercise is just a waste of time. Never forget that PKR is basically ex-Unmo. The others will find out soon enough what this really means.
Huh? Zulkifli Nordin in KEMENTERIAN PENGAJIAN TINGGI? But he is so kurang ajar!
This is a logical step.
Instead of just naming a single name for each ministry, PR came out with potential names for each ministry.
And i do hope those named will be able to “perform” up to expectation.
This is the much needed virtual test.
[...] The full list, in table form can be found on Nat’s blog HERE. [...]
Good line up BUT you miss out Sabah and Sarawak who may provide the fix deposit for PR in 2013. And those loose cannon in PR should not be included in the line up, they are thorns in the flesh.
Hi all,
I don’t see Husam on any ministry. Is he being put aside by PAS? As far as I am concern, I would definitely nominate him as Minister of Finance, from my point of view.
Pakatan has to show that they’re really “berpakat” in everything they do. Can’t you even agree to have just one person in each Ministry in the shadow cabinet instead af having 3? Having one from each party just shows that you can’t agree on anything, so how do you expect us to trust you to lead? There’ll be more infighting than work done!
I too am not thrilled about Zul Nordin. I am not even lukewarm about him being proposed for Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi. Infact I am not predisposed to him being proposed for anything remotely associated with education at all.
Hello PKR, boleh cadang lain MP ke?
Where is the list of those PR MIA MPs when the DNA Bill was passed?
I agree with teohjitkhiam.
In the current configuration, Pakatan appears to be too much in opposition mode, that’s why there’s 1-to-1 “man marking” to borrow a football term. Would be better for Pakatan to lay out their own vision of what ministries there should be, and then appoint key people who will actually produce a tangible ideas which can be implemented when Pakatan takes over, rather than just whack whatever BN does. We whack by committee, but committees are not usually known for creativity!
Lots of room for improvement, but it’s a start, and that’s good!
Also, just want to reiterate one more time… please la, get rid of the Y”B” from Kulim. This is getting embarrassing already. What’s the deal? Why is Anwar so scared of him? Is he blackmailing Anwar? Does Zul Nordin have 6 boxes of evidence implicating Anwar in naughty things?
And Gua Sin, Malaysian opposition has had a shadow cabinet before; DAP had one in the 80s.
DAP PLEASE GROW UP.
HAVE YOU GUYS FORGOTTEN JE VIRUS AT BKT PELANDOK.
WE THE CHINESE ARE THE DIRTIEST CREATURE AROUND.
TAKE A LOOK AT SEREMBAN MARKET AND OTHER PLACES OPERATED BY THE CHINESE. IT IS A REAL DISGUST. AMAT MEMALUKAN AND BEYOND CURE.
FOR ONCE I AGREED WITH PAS ON THIS ISSUE.
I feel that Kebajikan Masyarakat should deserve a ministry of its own or given more prominence as KEMENTERIAN KEBAJIKAN, HAL EHWAL WANITA, KELUARGA DAN MASYARAKAT.
There should be a joint committee between the above ministry with KEMENTERIAN DALAM NEGERI because PDRM is woefully inadequate to deal with domestic violence such as rape, child abuse, child snatching between divorce couple etc.
I do wonder if there is a need for KEMENTERIAN WILAYAH PERSEKUTUAN since we have a Datuk Bandar for KL (and leave Labuan’ municipal to fend for itself). Local elections could eliminate this post.
In an effort to clean up the judicial mess, should there is a temp ministry for law?
Perhaps we should get the relevant PR ministers to chair new bodies such as Ombudsman, IPCMC and what not….
“Firstly, to ensure a strong and cohesive body, Pakatan Rakyat should register as a coalition party rather than working under a loose cooperation.”
IIRC, Barisan Alternatif attempted registration but was denied because they didn’t have enough members. Apparently as BN grew more and more monolithic they got the RoS to ammend the rules, progressively increasing the minimum number of parties required to register as a formal coalition. I’m not sure what the actual number is, but I think it’s a lot more than 3.
As a result, let’s assume that until further notice, there can legally be only one formal coalition in Malaysia: Barisan Nasional.
Satu lagi “pencapaian” Barisan Nasional.
By having a representative from each party in PR 2 head the ministries, there’s no way UMNO can accuse any Pakatan party of practising supremacy over other parties
Littlebird,
Please check again…. Haji Ayub is YB Salahuddin FATHER!
Something at last!
They will not get it right the first time, so there’s room for improvement.
The first change: I want to see Husam Musa’s name on the llist.
nat: there were lotsa missing names – then i realised, they only included sitting MPs. Husam Musa is an example of someone included because he is not actually in Parliament..
Comrades, well done. Have this shadow cabinet charter of duties so as no overlapping of tasks and responsibilities between each which exists in the present cabinet? Without fear or favour these personalities should be able to “slash, cut, cincang & clobber” irresponsible people, jawatankuasa, and whatever organisation structure that donot fulfill their tasks. Wujudkan a monitoring body to ensure effectiveness. Have shadow cabinet meeting. Regret that due to the barrier constructed by BN which needs at least 7 political parties before we can register as an entity. But I fully agree if possible we should have one entity under one common flag in the next GE. Congratulations for PR. Novel idea. Take note the comments on some characters. Put emotion aside. Act like a government and mean business. Thanks.
I think the 3 name from each party for each kementerian is a good start ..we should not pin point and make one candidate first .. let the 3 candidates fight and work .. another 4 more years to go , who can perform , he/she will be elected. I see more woman in this cabinet .. rather than bn .. at least the kementerian kesihatan candidate is a DR ..
I dont think much of this line-up now. The real test is when they make a decision or counter a decision together on the BN Ministries. Lets see when religious issues crop up how the shadow Jabatan Perdana Menteri comes with a single decision. As it is DAP and PAS are always making separate statements. Lets see if all decisions or opinions by PKR, PAS and DAP can be channeled collectively and in one voice through the shadow ministries from now on.
Why no shadow cabinet? Because PR can’t compromise! Plain and simple, nobody can put a spin on that.
Why no coalition? Do you people honestly think they have the balls to officially come together under one banner? PAS to abondon Islamic state and DAP to abondon Malaysia for Chinese and PKR to abondon ‘don’t know what’? DAP Kedah can pull-out of PR just because of an illegal pig abattoir. They are more concerned of the pig-eating people than the sensitivity of the majority Malay-Muslim community.
Don’t you ever wonder why Tian Chua, Hatta Ramli or Mahfudz are not lying on the ground leading to Kg Buah Pala? DAP people won’t do such thing because they have the puppets mentioned do it. But now even the puppets are not lying on the road anymore!
Indexgain, I am talking about the taliban in PKR cloth.
All said & done………..
All these MPs must know why they are in PKR in the first place…!
They “must not” be absent for any meetings…..!!!
They really, realy “HAVE TO” strife for the rakyat….!!!!!!
Next GE coming soon.
i believe it’s just a list of potential candidates for the minister post..not necessarily to put 3 representatives from each party in 1 ministry..and about husam..he’s currently not an MP..unless he contest for MP seat on next GE
Common guys…please, please, please try understand that , it’s just a starting point for a very long and complex journey to build a “new nation” or ” a new malaysia” – not a plain stupid 1Malaysia – we dont need that cheap & low mind ideas..
Lets give them a chance to prove themself…too early/premature for any body to evaluate something that still under infant state ! Be rational, practical & realistic in this …they have done the best to reach this level…what about you ??
And just you look at PKR line-up, compare with the other two…what do you think ?? PKR just truly malaysian…something BN has to watch !!
For anybody so worry about YB Kulim…I must say that your are judging someone without truly understand his ideas / principle…for what ever excuse , you must respect the freedom of speech of the others…
Cheers PR.
Finally, we get to see the potential candidates for Pakatan’s shadow cabinet.
To resolve the doubts public voters are now having about their credibility, competence and viabilitty of the coalition, Pakatan should put these three committee members per ministry to openly discuss their views/policies (cross examined by the media or internet media like mkini and minsider in a video telecast forum) and allow the public to vote who is most competent and fair to the rakyat in responding to issues such as:
1. the global economic downturn and Msia’s new model to survive (sorry, Najib has won half the battle on this front by dismantling NEP last week, in spirit if not fully in letter). So Pakatan has to work doubly hard o nthe new economic model.
2. the social problem of race and religion that is hampering the rakyat from moving forward. To what extent are these minister commitee members open to a more flexible, intellectually free society or a more restrictive, closed society based on the narrow religious restricitions of one particular domineering faction of Muslims ?
Finally, each member should come clean on the hidden agenda of unity talks – power for one race or ensuring good race relations in a complex society like ours?
Just as the internet has revolutionised political news coverage, Pakatan should use any impactful technology to reach out to the key voters who wish to see the insides of the brains and hearts of our next leaders.
Sorry to say this but based on the recent crisis in PR, the insides of their brains/hearts seem more like a pandora’s box to me.
i most welcome the list, its better late than never, oohs!!!!!!!! PR have forgotten to include Sabah and Sarawak parties????? as we know, without them, PR will have tough time to win 13th GE. Maybe the list is not perfect, i guess PR need to trial and error, Kudos
Nat, can you create a poll to decide who among the three group best to be the minister? Thanks
Zulkifli Nordin a no no. no offense of being Muslim but he is not tolerant and flexible in the Malaysian context.
Malaysia is about Chinese, Malay, Indian, iban..and Muslims, Christians,Buddhist, Hindus…
He should be in UMNO as he sounds very Malay.Muslims are supposed to be forgiving and tolerant…….but toi have him around , is just like having Karpal singh around.ITS HEALTHY TO HAVE CONFLICTS IN POLITICS !!!
