Remember, remember the 10th of November.
- Bersih, and V.

I find myself short of inspirational words, the day before this event.

I find myself remembering what it’s like to sit behind bars, and never know for sure when one might walk free again.

I have never been arrested under the ISA, and neither have you. But if they do come for us, I don’t want there to be no one left to speak for us.

2pm, Saturday (I suggest going really, really early), time to stand and be counted.

Random Pre-pre-script: Some interesting observations by Aisehman on the T4BH blog.

Pre-Script: On the subject of teaching, I very much invite you to this blog post, which invites support for some really great efforts in reaching out to younger, underprivileged kids.

So, I advertised the last session far too last-minute, and decided not to make the same mistake twice for this 3 day initiative.

I do hope many more will consider America as a destination for overseas studies. Perhaps too many think it is too flaky, too hard to get into, or too hard to afford then it really is.

Come by the workshop and get an alternative view :) Here’s the program:

This death happened at almost exactly the same time as Teoh’s.

At the time, details were scant, but now:

According to the police, R Gunasegaran, 31, had died from a drug abuse.

His sister, R Ganga Gowri, 32, disagreed with this version in her police report today in which she alleged that he may have died after being assaulted.

This was claimed by three witnesses who were said to be detained in the same lockup with Gunasegaran, she stated in her police report.

“These (witnesses) are very afraid. They do not wish the authorities breathing down on them and shall remain anonymous.

He added that the witnesses said that Gunasegaran was kicked in the chest, hit with a hose and a piece of wood.

Once again, the autopsy is the key.

However, Ganga Gowri had not examined the body for wounds, which is still at the Kuala Lumpur General Hospital mortuary.

She will not claim the body until a post-mortem and toxicology report is released.

Visvanathan said that although the standard practice by the authorities is to release the reports after two months, this had to be changed.

It is insane to have the family claim the body and perform funeral rites and then wait for the post-mortem report, say for instance if the body had evidence of an assault whilst in detention,” added Harris.

Harris said the police should be fair and kind to the family of the deceased and allow them access to the reports in order for them to request for a second independent autopsy if necessary.

Harris’ blog has how you can help out too:

Tomorrow, or in the days to come, a decision may have to be made to remove Gunasegaran’s body from the mortuary at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital to be take to another hospital facility for post-mortem.

We are given to understand that this procedure would cost around RM3,000.00

The family of Gunasegaran are not people of means.

Will you help to bear the cost of the post-mortem?

If you care to, send me an e-mail at thepeoplesparliament@gmail.com for details.

Another event, as I suffer through mild writer’s block, slow news days, or combinations thereof. Received from Wong Chin Huat:

Dear Colleagues,

A special memorial will be held tomorrow night at KLSCAH tomorrow night, the 14th day of Beng Hock’s death. But this is not one for him alone, but for all others who perished in custody – police lock-up, prison, detention camp. We do not have the figure since the inception of Malaya or Malaysia. From 2003 to date, the number is 1,794 excluding Beng Hock. That is 23 deaths every month, or 3 deaths every four days.
One life lost is too much. Is it not? When Beng Hock died, many of us would like him to be the last. He did not make it. Another person, 31, just died in custody in Sentul a few days ago. Can we still feel indifferent?
Come tomorrow night to KLSCAH, in black. (Please avoid bright colour even if you dont have anything black.) Light a candle for the dead who should be living.

There will be no political speech.

There will be no religious ceremony.

There will be only tribute to the dead and reflections of the living.

Yours,

Chin Huat

I’ve not yet read other reports of this incident, but if the following is true, then the cops clearly:

a) are spending a lot of time on Facebook

b) haven’t learnt their priorities, despite the numerous, numerous, exhortations that they clamp down on real crime instead.

I saw a bunch of pictures, will try to update this post with links to them if I can.

Statement by the 1BLACKMalaysia Facebook Group

The 1BLACKMalaysia Facebook Group organized an event called ’1BLACKCommute’ (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=122875992194) today. The idea was to have people wearing black and boarding an LRT train together for at least two times.

The event attracted a total of 7 dedicated participants, and also attracted about a hundred even more ‘dedicated’ policemen.

We were shocked to learn from the media that about a hundred policemen were stationed at Dataran Merdeka and Masjid Jamek this morning, waiting for ‘the 1BLACKMalaysia group’.

Coincidentally, Puteri UMNO was having a crime awareness campaign at the same area and had at least a thousand Puteris marching down the street.

And the police were here for 7 people wearing black in solidarity with Perakians and families of custodial casualties such as Teoh Beng Hock, and not for the thousands of pink-clad Puteris.

Although such double standards were very common and very much expected, it was still shocking to know that hundreds of men in blue were deployed to possibly arrest 7 people, while over 1800 people were left to die in custody since 2003.

The 1BLACKCommuters departed from KL Sentral to Masjid Jamek via LRT, then walked to Bukit Nanas Monorial station to board a monorial train to Bukit Bintang. The 1BLACKCommuters then walked around the Bukit Bintang area before taking another monorail train back to KL Sentral.

Some resourceful participants also brought some printed messages which everyone could easily slip into their handheld files and folders. Therefore, the 1BLACKCommuters were holding their files with messages such as “Who Killed Him?”, “Justice for Teoh BH”, “1BLACKMalaysia”, and “1803 Custodial Deaths in Malaysia from 2003-2008″ for the whole duration of the event. The messages managed to get a lot of attention from other commuters and pedestrians. A commuter even gave the 1BLACKCommuters the thumbs up and thanked them for their effort.

This shows that it is that simple for ordinary Malaysians to express themselves and to apply pressure to unjust, undemocratic and irresponsible institutions. For example, a person who is outraged by the manner in which Teoh Beng Hock died in custody can carry a paper printed with the words ‘Justice for Beng Hock’ around in a file when going to work, or to school, or to a meeting. Anyone can do it.

————————————————————————————————————————–

’1BLACKCommute’ is just one of the series of events such as 1BLACKKopi’O’ and 1BLACKMovie which the group has been organising to heed the original call for action by Bersih on May 5th to “paint every state and territory, every town and village black with our clothes, headbands, hats, turbans, veils, armbands, ribbons and stickers and let everyone see a sea of black walking into an office, a market, a mosque, a temple, a church, a college, a park, a bus, a commuter or LRT car, a ferry or an aeroplane”.

1BLACK events are a series of subtle, ‘smart’ protests, which every citizen can carry out everyday. Commuting, drinking coffee, watching movies are all very much part of our daily lives, thus one just has to insert messages into such activities to make his/her point or express his/her feelings on an issue. The 1BLACKMalaysia group is telling the public that there’s no need to be involved in slogan-crying, marching, or mass gathering to send out a strong message.

I don’t think I can write a fitting tribute :( Except to say that her beauty and her art will live on forever :( :(

Sad to hear that she hasn’t been getting better yet :( :( Our thoughts and prayers are with her. She’s set such a fine example for Malaysian storytellers… Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery!

It’s something of a busy weekend for me, and I haven’t perused the documents at the famous blog at length yet, but a number of irregularities highlighted from the Malaysiakini article sound persuasive to me:

Since July 23, the blog titled Truth for Teoh Beng Hock posted documents to back its claim that 84 ‘projects’ amounting to more than RM200,000 in the Sungai Pelek constituency were awarded to one Wong Chuan How.

Wong, as it turned out, is Liu’s special assistant while Sungai Pelek is a state seat held by Yap Ee Wah of the opposition Barisan Nasional.

Liu explained that approval of funds for the opposition held Sungai Pelek constituency were handled by him and records of disbursement had been posted online in his blog since last year (nat: does anyone have a link to this?).

Armed with a two large ring files, Liu said the files recorded all the disbursement of state funds and it was proven that certain information in the documents posted by the blog author were falsified.

Among the such instances the alleged disbursement of RM1,000 for a pesta ang pow (Chinese new year function) in September 2008. Chinese new year celebrations are usually celebrated between January and March each year.

Another instance is the alleged disbursement of RM1,000 to buy hampers for Seberang Perai village chiefs in November 2008. Liu said this was impossible as the district officer would not approve of distributing funds outside the constituency, let alone another state.

He said the naming of Wong as a contractor, coupled with the irregularities in the list of funds disbursed, made the allegations in the blog questionable.

This comes a little late, sorry, but will be speaking at an event. Details from Education Malaysia and Facebook.

If you’re interested in longer term assistance through the university application process (especially to American schools), do drop by and we can have a chat.
