16 arrested for trying to celebrate Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday (updated)

Updated: I was asked to highlight the stark change of tone The Star took in reporting these arrests. The online version from that night itself provided fairly accurate coverage, whereas the print version for the next day eliminated many important details (eg: the fact that it was organised by the Selangor government) and front-paged some oh so pretty pictures designed to highlight ‘approved’ Malaysians showing they care about human rights. So, (innocent) celebrities = ok, actual suffering Burmese that Aung San Suu Kyi fights for = TANGKAP TANGKAP TANGKAP!

Once again the might of Malaysia’s indefatigable police force is brought to bear upon…….. people celebrating a birthday :(

As if the Burmese haven’t been made to suffer enough already, back home and back in slave trading Malaysia.

Why? Why is it so hard for cops to just concentrate on preventing real crime?

I

just

don’t

understand.

URGENT APPEAL: 19 JUNE 2009
16 Refugees arrested during a Special Celebration of Burma’s Democratic Leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s 64 Birthday at Taman Jaya

The authority’s intolerance to peaceful assembly continued, when the police arrested 16 Burmese refugees at Taman Jaya during a special celebration of Burma’s democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s 64 birthdays before the event started.

Dear Sir,

Re: Release those 16 Refugees arrested during a Special Celebration of Burma’s Democratic Leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s 64 Birthday at Taman Jaya

We are writing to you, once again, to express our outrage and our strongest condemnation over your government’s ongoing crackdown on freedom of expression.

We are appalled by your government and the police’s latest actions and view this as yet another attempt by your government to intimidate people from exercising their freedom to express their views.

We demand that the 16 individuals should be released immediately and unconditionally. We further demand that your government recognise their refugee’s status and providing protection to them.

We would like to remind you that freedom of expression and assembly is guaranteed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Yours sincerely,

Mr. Tan, right on! Burmese refugees are discriminated because the majority are Christians. But if one is a Muslim like the Filipino Mindanaos, there is a welcome! Further, instead of bringing in so many Bagladeshis and Pakistanis, where many are extremist Muslims (many tried to exploit poor local girls by marrying them especially in Borneo, in order to stay in Malaysia), it’s refugees like the long suffering Burmese, who should be allowed to work. Are terror groups finding a haven in Bangladesh?

Police have uncovered South Asian terror operatives in the country. Reports allege that Bangladeshi and Pakistani intelligence services are involved.

There’s something really sick with ‘our’ police…

Yeah right! Rohingya refugees are getting so much publicity and lobbying, including from Anwar because they are Muslims! And many are allowed to stay. Further, we have to be careful because many Bangladeshis are posing as Rohingyas since they are from the same ethnic group and near the border with each other!
