Instead of a book, why don’t we have a blogpost here where commenters can contribute to what projects our young Malaysians can commit themselves after SPM?
First thing, take a short break. You deserve it after concluding 11 years of education, topped off by the SPM exams. Take 2 weeks of break to chill, relax, rest and collect your thoughts.
Then, start exploring what academic and career paths you would be interested in. Try looking for internship opportunities in things you might be interested in. Gain some experience at a possible career path.
Next, look for what kind of pre-University programs to pursue. For our Malaysian youths whose life path may not be through university, look at what polytechnics, technical and professional training courses are out there.
Then, start volunteering and doing community service. This is one way to gain some exposure and internship experience for possible career paths you are interested in.
For example, if you are interested in medicine and nursing, why not volunteer at local government hospitals to entertain the patients and kids there? See whether you have the skills to interact with your possible future patients.
Or for those into Computer Science or Engineering, volunteer your technical knowledge to orphanages, charity organizations and non-profits with your IT and Computer knowledge.
Interested in business? Volunteer to help in event management, organizing fund-raising events or helping to write proposals and plans for non-profits and charity-based organizations.
I just think waiting for a book to come out might be too long. And too passive a wait. Be pro-active!
Lochos Vestu, thanks for your sharing.
I’m Chen Chow, one of the people in the group that is working on What’s After SPM. Agree with you that having a website with advice would help the people on making choices. But we feel that, there are enough people who are contributing towards that already. There are a number of sites/blogs that reach out to the people on that.
What we hope to reach is the group that may not have access of internet. We hope to reach to the more rural areas and suburb, where we hope to bring this possibility to them.
Would hope that you would write and share your experience too!
Thanks!
