Paula Khoo’s Arrest: Nationwide Intimidation Against Peaceful Vigils (Updated Sunday morning)

Update 16/11 am – Thank goodness, Paula is out. Reading her account brought back memories. I think Lucia will also be posting an account. I’m relieved, but still composing possible narratives for what is going on around the country. Maybe more after tonight.

It seems that every time I go for a wedding, the police arrest someone :(

I’ve only managed to find coverage on Anil’s and Antares’, about Paula Khoo’s arrest tonight.

I’m really appalled. I note that they waited for the crowd to disperse peacefully – which of course they did, as they always do – then quietly kidnapped her into a police van!

>:(

Last week I wasn’t sure what the arrests meant. With this incident, I’m now starting to think that these brave vigils have truly achieved their goal of unifying Malaysians and shaking those so arrogantly in power.

Perhaps they learnt from Selangor’s mistakes, and decided not to attack the crowd full frontal, but instead choose to harass and intimidate individuals, thinking the rest of us won’t care or notice.

Ah, there you would be mistaken, Mr. Policeman.

We’re with you Paula, and the people shall prevail!!

This is disgusting! Once again, an innocent activist being forced into police custody as part of the government’s “Let’s Intimidate the Masses” campaign. Completely unwarranted. I personally know Paula Khoo, she was the best teacher I have ever had and the only one who ever emphasized the importance of THINKING and QUESTIONING.

The latest news from Anil Netto’s blog is that she has been released on bail and has to report back Nov 28th. My thoughts and prayers are with you Miss Khoo. May justice prevail!

    Dear Nat

perhaps you guys should look at the legal aspect, and perhaps launch civil suit against the police, to demand damages on constitutional grounds of freedom to expression and assembly.

When the present Gov abuses their power, will the rakyat forgive those of you who enforces the abuses? All these abuses must be recorded so that future action may be taken against them? All events which is not in order should be recorded, yes even the polisman who punched the state assembly man will have to answer for the charges in the near future…..a crime commited by anyone must be punished.

Those in power must realise that you can stop the messenger but you cannot stop the message.
The brave Malaysians are only exercising their citizens rights in a peaceful manner -the future of our children depend on what type of society we leave for them-one where they will not live in fear & discriminated against based on their skin, religion or color.
When Martin Luther King started his civil rights movement & anti discrimination campaign only a handful came forward. This mushroomed into a million people marching -blacks & whites all marching to demand end to racial segregation/discrimination.
Today Martin Luther King’s famous speech something to the effect that ‘he has a deam that oneday America will judge people not on the color of his skin but the content of their character ‘ has come true with Barack Obama being elected as President USA by whites & blacks.
Hopefully oneday Malaysia will also judge non-muslim malays on the content of their character not on race grounds.
The ISA stifle discussion on important issues but the Politicians esp.Umno & the Rakyat must also act responsibly not to hurt the feeings of others
as Malaysia is a complex multi racial nation with
sensitivities of each Race. Hidup Reformasi !!

  • We can also look at it this way, Nat. A large number of people who have experienced arrest & detention later become prominent leaders.
The home ministry is actually helping the rakyat identify natural leadership potential amongst the populace. I wouldn’t be surprised, in a year or two, to learn that Paula Khoo has been elected state councillor or MP! When Anwar gets to be PM his 6-year stint in prison is likely to make him cherish freedom as a prerequisite of true democracy. He for one knows how it feels to be persecuted for one’s beliefs.

    Dear Nat,

I fully agree with what Sim Kwang Yang wrote.

We shall launch a civil suit against the police. Let’s put more pressure on the authorities.
