Videos of police attacking Negaraku singing crowd; Selangor police chief proven liar

While The Star Online excitedly writes about Gong Li’s Singaporean citizenship, Malaysiakini finally tells us that all arrested last night have been released except for one individual (I learnt via Terence Tan’s facebook that the one still detained is being held due to an oustanding warrant of arrest out in Pahang).

More importantly, videos are out – These two via the Rev. Sivin Kit (the second shot by Khalid Abu Bakar’s ridiculous denial that the police charged into a group of peaceful citizens singing Negaraku.

I still can’t find a compelling narrative that fits what has happened and explains the motives.

One of the most disturbing aspects is that the police appeared to have decided to attack at the last possible moment – which also happened to be a moment that was an obvious public relations disaster.

This may mean that the police had planned to attack all along. Not having been given a ‘better’ opportunity earlier, they decided to do so before the crowd dispersed after the anthem (as indicated by the organisers, I understand).

There’s much to uncover here. I’ll keep a list here of the expanding amount of writing that is coming out on what happened:

- Sivin Kit
- Anil Netto
- Wong Chin Huat
- Melvin Mah
- Amin Iskandar
- Tony Pua
- Lau Weng San

A full list of those arrested compiled by Suaram, after these excerpts from Malaysiakini.

Selangor police chief Khalid Abu Bakar has denied that the police moved in on participants at a candle-light vigil last night while they were singing the national anthem.

“That is what they (participants) are claiming,” Khalid told reporters at the Petaling Jaya police district headquarters about midnight.

When told that there was a video recording of the police action, Khalid replied: “I am denying it.”

According to Khalid, a group had been gathering at the field opposite Amcorp Mall for four consecutive weeks and have not heeded police demands to apply for a permit.

“We have given them enough warnings,” he said.

Asked if the group had posed a danger to the public, Khalid replied “That doesn’t matter. The law says that a permit must be obtained.”

Asked if this amounted to double standards, since no action had been taken against pro-government groups such as those protesting against the appointment of a non-Malay to head PKNS (Selangor government investment arm).

Khalid denied this, and reiterated that the group had failed to heed demands to obtain a police permit for four weeks.

I doubt the records will show that the police lodged some official protest to the organisers of the weekly ISA vigils about the lack of permits.

It seems more like DCP Khalid is stonewalling and taking a “deny everything” hard line – taking a leaf from the page of the BN book, where they make statements that fly in the face of all available evidence, trying somehow to ‘outsmart’ reality just by repeating a bunch of lies.

We’ll continue to follow all closely. Here’s the list of those arrested:

1. Tony Pua Tiam Wee, PJ Utara Member of Parliament
2. Ronnie Liu Tian Khiew, Selangor State Executive Council member and
Pandamaran State Assemblyman
3. Lau Weng San, Kampung Tunku State Assemblyman
4. Teoh Way Keng, Petaling Jaya City Councillor
5. Ashok Kandiah, Lawyer
6. Ong Boon Keong, Activist and Coordinator for MAFREL

  1. What else the poolice can do? Chow Kit is too dangerous for them. Thieves are too smart for them. Who else left?

  2. the selangor police chief just got caught by his own lie. what a joke.

  3. The best thing is to take the case to court. It is time. Let the court be jammed with civil cases like these. making police report is futile.

  4. You can say that the arresteds list is muhibbah though~

  5. Not standing still and respecting the Negara Ku, our National Anthem, is TREASON. TREASON comitted by our own Police.

    Peace

  6. Will someone file a suit against this idiots for denying our rights????
    Bar Council……how about you???
They cant even finish their investigation into Ahmad Ismail Racist case!!!!and yet talking so much!!!

  7. OMG!!!! They deemed a Catholic Priest to be dangerous too!!??

No wonder these cowards moved out faster than a speeding bullet out of the Jalan Haji Taib neighbourhood!!!!

  8. I’m just so fcuking sick of Malaysian BN Government the fcuking knnccb Police who only listen to the idiotic moron Syed Hamid for doing all these!

    F***K the BN government

  9. I can’t help but feel the cops on the ground didn’t really want to get rough… but were given specific orders to create a bit of havoc and scare the rakyat, thereby discouraging others from coming to future protests. That might explain why they waited so long to charge… they had to work up enough anger and adrenaline to switch into ORC MODE from just standing around on duty. Of course, the cops can SEE that the people who ccome to these rallies are far from a threat to public order – they are in fact perfectly respectable members of the public including in their midst MPs, doctors, lawyers, public intellectuals & artists!

  10. All UMNO Politicians and Govt. Servants shoul use Lactacyd mouth wash 6 times a day as anything that comes out from their mouth are LIES an FILTH.

  11. The FRUs were ruthless against the Chinese during the May 13 riots. It was quite obvious on whose side they were on. The Minister of Home Affairs then was none other than Syed Albar’s father. Seems like history is repeating itself. The only difference is the growling “rottweillers” are let loose on all – Chinese, Malays, Indians alike!

  12. TO BE STUCK (& STRUCK) WITH OWN LIES

Those who want to tell outright lies
Will have to live forever with their lies
And must have their own conscience to prick
If they continue on with their lies to stick

  13. I THINK THE MALAYSIAN PUBLIC HAVE TO DO SOMETHING TO TEACH THE POLICE A GOOD LESSON. YOU DO NOT ABUSE THE UNIFORM YOU WEAR BY ARRESTING AND HARASSING PEACEFUL CITIZENS OF THE COUNTRY. SOMEBODY HAVE TO TAKE THE LEAD. TAKE THEM TO COURT AND TEACH THEM A GOOD LESSON. IF FINANCIAL AID IS NEEDED FOR LAWYERS FEES I WILL DEFINITELY CONTRIBUTE AND ALSO VERY SURE THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS OF MALAYSIANS WILL DO THE SAME***SUE THE POLICE FOR ALL IT’S WORTH***

  14. No doubt about it … you gotta be proud to be a Malaysian

I’m disgusted and appalled at the behaviour of the police

  15. Let’s start a collection from the public to institute action against the Police. I agree we need to teach these jokers a lesson.

  16. What do you expect from a bunch of uneducated morons? (LOL…i have to practise what i said about name-calling but..sorry-la!)

Honestly…..they have just taken this whole agenda to a another level. Syed H A must be fuming that RPK is out and more so Najib must be grilling him left right centre, so this is how he(Syed HA) retaliated….hmmmm

Worst now he denied knowing of the incident yesterday…..now that is SOOO NOT A TRUTH!

  17. Here is proof (video): Chief Police Officer lied. FRU charged during Negara Ku. Please tell the world

  18. Idiotic scums! The Home Minister should be after thugs, murderers and rapists. His face depicts the idiocy of a moron. He should be out in the streets castrating rapists.

  19. aiyah! dont blame the policemen on the groung la…they just following order..

sue the igp 7 bn goverment and make sure everybody vote bn out next time..

  20. Hi Nat,

The second video is mine. Someone told you? Found from search at Youtube?

    Peter

    nat: via Sivin Kit :)

  21. pls dont provoke the police. fight violence with peace. the gandhi way.

retaliation only provokes the enforcement. they are humans too. dont give them excuse to use the batons.

when the police are there, just disperse but walk in different directions.

to achieve this, that means we gotta hold more peeeeeeaceful protests. silent protests. once a week. sooner or later, the police will be flabbergasted at the seemingly mundane nature of the event.

the enforecements are police personnel whom are lowly paid. they are just taking orders from the top. as anwar has said, we have nothing against these lower ranked police personnel. they have families too. i bet the understand the akwardness but at the same time are duty-bound to act.

ronnie lie, tony pua, lau, chinese name, chinese name, chinese name, indian name, indian name, one or two malay names, chinese name, chinese name, indian name…you get the picture here? it comes across as ‘racial’ but we all know this isnt the case. but it is perceived to be so.

we need more malay friends in the front line.

do not provoke the police. if they ask to disperse, just disperse. but tomorrow organise another one. then another one the day after tomorrow. the police will go ‘gila’ over this game!

how to hentam you all when you are all so obedient each time they ask you to disperse.

this way, the message gets across more so.

    carmanio.

  22. I doubt the records will show that the police lodged some official protest to the organisers of the weekly ISA vigils about the lack of permits.

Very true. I was there on all 4 Sundays. There was not a single police around. And there was no announcement that we were required to apply for a permit. The police chief is a blatant liar.

  23. Carmanio is right…. those running-dogs in blue are obliged to issue a warning to the crowd to disperse before they start their rabid attack. So, just disperse la…and protest elsewhere again. Don’t give them an excuse to bite you.

  24. Of course police is practicing double standard. And for them to deny roughing out the group and lying about it shows what level of integrity this Khalid chap has.

  25. great pick-ups, Nat… i will some more on mine soon..

We were in PR territory too… i wonder who gave the order & what were the objectives…

Our regular sunday family gathering with kids, ladies, elder citizens were of national threat??

  26. ARGh!!! my tutor arrested??? Fark kao them!!

  27. The Police for that matter the entire Government Machinary is lucky, very lucky that Malaysians in general have calmer nerves in comparison to other nations around the world.

For such public and bold display of apathy hurtled towards the very society that feeds them , some nations rise to teach them a lesson…

Indeed all those who are involved in such a rape against society have thus far been showered by blessing from the creator.

Do you think the army or the police or anybody can stop if the rakyat decide to break them…?

The Malaysian government cannot exist within an activist society, for they cant make hay while their unholy sun shines.

But I wonder if this attitude of pushing the rakyat to the wall will soon lead to hardening and change to that peaceful core that we have all been imbibed with.

What makes the Malaysian Govt so cock sure it can’t start happening here. We have enough examples all around our borders…I think its time the public warned the govt and its forces which infact are servants of the rakyat.

DONT TAKE THE RAKYAT FOR GRANTED…ONCE YOU FORCE THE COMMON TO CROSS THE LINE ..IT WOULD TAKE MANY YEARS FOR US TO STABILISE…

All of us deserve better…the GOVERNMENT OF MALAYSIA MUST FEAR THE RAKYAT..NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

  28. Why dont you send this video to CNN? You can send it to ireport.com

  29. to “..delCapo // Nov 10, 2008 at 5:23 pm …”

with all due respect, “we” are not in pr territory as far as police is concerned. they UNDER kdn i.e. botak head, i.e. putrajaya. state power is oh-so-limited.

one thing we can consider is the “banish” the selangor cpo and all state top levels from selangor. it’s almost always them who kowtow to those crooks in putrajaya.

there must be something we can do to limit their power. they have the HQ, we have local advantage…somewhere…

  30. I planned to be there but my husband hasn’t fully healed . I really want to be there to eyewitness and experience their violent act. No fear to fight those evil force.

  31. to KLH // Nov 10, 2008 at 5:02 pm

and while we’re at it, it helps if those interviewed by malaysiakini (or other media) were to try to speak in bahasa; as these will be ’seen’ to be notso lopsided (not that it was/is in the first place). but ‘packaging’ and ‘perception’ in oh-so important.

this is malaysia. we want to appease those well-meaning malay friends of ours who’re not sure if lim, chong, muthu, santiago, tan, wong, mabel, abel, cain etc…were doing it for general goodness or for ’shallow’ racial considerations i.e. “non-malays”.

perception is important. conduct those events in the bahasa language. it’s the national language. the more ronnie, tonypua etc…appear on tv speaking mandarin/english, the more alienated they will be to the malay masses.

they had/have all those “15-min fame”; make good use of it. speak in bahasa. try, at least try. your effort will be appreciated.

    carmanio.

  32. and btw, as much i respect uncle lim ks as THE parliamenterian (no one else comes close), i think YB should retreat to the back-ground to lend support (behind the scenes) bcos i could almost imagine how this ‘ultra chinaman-look’ can scare away those ignorant kampong malay folks.

i’d say let ronnie, tony, yaakop sapri, khalid’s polical sec, charles santago,dr xavier jayakumar appear in tv together all the time, most of the time. together they appearing on tv, they form an excellent “dream team”; multiracial,young&energetic,4malays+2chinese+2indians+4sabah/sarawak bumis. and by god, pls speak in bahasa more than english/mandarin/other languages.

    then start selling :-)

  34. Lie. lie and lie. They learned well from their HUMNO masters.

  37. To All our Beloved Sultans and our Beloved Agong,

The FRU and The Police truly requires discipline at the Highest Level and please act for all the Poor Rakyats before the country goes to the Dogs. There are a disgrace to your Highness, The Country, The Religion and The constitution. Pull the whole force in to stand disciplinary action. Enrope in Fresh Graduates to replace these bunch of Monkeys who does not respect our own National Anthem.

  38. And they say Malaysia is a Muslim Nation that is fair to all levels of society???
and the Police are Muslim personnels???

Holy Allah!!!!!! LoOk at how they practise Islam!!!!

  39. reality check
    (i) no one else in the world are gonna (able to) help us in significant ways other than to create awareness etc… (think palestine etc…). at best, these outsiders could only watch us on cnn and then they’d go on about their own businesses.
(ii) only malaysians can help malaysians.
(iii) speak in bahasa all (most of) the time whenever any YBs / activists are on national tv. it is the national language. that is selling it well. precious time in front of the camera should not be wasted. even if these are posted on youtube, our malay friends (our main target audience) whom are not well versed in english (or mandarin) can at least give their precious time to listen to our pitch.
(iv) do not provoke the police. period. it’s no use any of those YBs appearing on the the following day showing off their ’scars’ in regards to ‘police brutality’. it’d only alienate them (the police) further. if you dont have the police on your side (or at least, dont see you with contempt), then you’re on to something….
    (v) no(t many) sane police would find it in their hearts and conscience to beat up another unarmed and non-threatening individual.
(vi) i know the likes of cnn only air those segments which are sensational (i.e. involving violence) but, in all humility, the greatness of gandhi and dr martin luther king will shine through no matter what. this is the ultimate aim.

god bless all brave (but non-violent) individuals.
from a bloke who can only write in the sidelines…

  40. After I got home aound 3Am I spent a couple of hours reading reports on Mkini & MT & leaving comments here & there. Decided it’s more effective to flesh out my fragmented eyewitness reports and turn it into a full-blown blogpost. Finally done…. this event needs to be fully documented as it establishes “mala fide” just as clearly as Hamid Albar’s vile act of packing RPK off to Kamunting for 2 yrs to prevent his legal team from freeing him via the first habeas corpus application.

  41. The full-blown eyewitness report is up on my blog.

  42. You people only have yourselves to blame. You VOTED in this corrupt regime time after time.

You allowed them to take advantage of you time after time. You all stood meekly aside while they did what they wanted. And at most all you did was gripe and whine on the blogs, on Youtube etc.

Where were you when this and countless other incidents happened? Sitting in front of the computer? You deserve another 50 years of UMNO hegemony. Malaysians are cowards and kiasu.
