Umno Sons Dominate: Nominations show strong trend towards dynastic politics

I was tempted to name this post “keris wavers lead polls,” but thought better of it :P

The observations on the Umno nominations I have to offer are probably nothing particularly original, but…

So, bits I found significant.

Ku Li’s big zero: Sure to have a damaging pyschological effect. Lends credence to a full on consolidation behind Najib, and detracts from the likelihood of any ‘internal reform’ tendencies.

Mukhriz’s dominance: Probably a reflection of Dollah’s unpopularity, and nostalgia for the Mahathir days.

I’m not sure what Hisham’s big lead is due to. Seems almost too simple to suggest the keris issue (putting Hisham at the forefront of Umno will be a huge blow to non-Malay BN), but *shrugs*.

Oh, it just occurred to me (and thus the new/current title) – it’s all legacy!

Big winners so far? Razak’s son, Hussein Onn’s son, Mahathir’s son.

Dynasties are so boooooooooring.

  • dynasty? u answer this first dude..

karpal singh’s dynasty in DAP, Lim Kit Siang’s, LGE and wife from same family? Azizah, Anwar and Izzah, are they related?

then only you can talk about dynasty, who knows one day you will endorse your son or daughter to be your successor.. then you will regret writing this.

this world is full of hypocrisy

  • oohh allow me to add, their fathers are no longer in power now due to death and retirement.

But i am sure hundred percent anwar ibrahim is still alive, lim kit siang is alive and kicking, karpal singh is still breathing too..

how dare you talk about dynasty.

malay adage.. “gajah di depan mata tak nampak, kuman seberang nampak”

  • Ooohhh, You’re so right! I didn’t even notice that all the front runners are sons of past PMs!

I guess it has something to do with ’sticking with the old and what you know’, eh?

  • I think there are many more second generation UMNO leaders that I know of, including our detain-you-to-protect-you Syed Hamid and Nur Jazlan Mohamed (Rahman).

UMNO has degenerated into a party of aristocrats, not of commoners. It cannot fight for the people. Plain and simple.

Fear rears its ugly head again
United we stand, divided we fall
Cruel tyrants seek to inflict pain
Knights we must be, all for one and one for all.

    Yonder tyrants rise once more
Only we can stem this evil tide
United we must stand to guard the door.

    Murderous forces swiftly gather
    Angry, lustful devils seeking revenge
How true that vultures of the same feather
Always sit and feed around a stench
Take courage my friend, we will overcome this sorrow
Hold strong with Truth as our defender
In times of tyrants, we must fight for tomorrow
Roar like lions, smash the devils — TO ARMS! NO SURRENDER.

    Dear Umnorambaisari,

What did LGE gets for being the son of LKS, jailtime in M’sian Prison Resort for defending underage girls from Monsters.

And what about Izzah and Deo, make half a mistake and they will be in kamunting like their father.

They join their parents is because they have strong backbones.

    Please wake up you moron

  • umnorambaisari;

You are quite right to a certain degree, when you are in the Opposition, you need to earn for your ‘dinner’, not may young talented professionals are prepared to climb the political ladder via the Opposition…the hard way.
In UMNO’s kingdom, everything is laid on the golden plate for the privileged families…all they need doing is sit on their dusty as**s and fill their wallets. Hence, the difference. How does that grab you?
You are blinded with reality and kissing hand and feet is your second nature!

    huanchoo,

What umnorambaisari said is very true and you should not get so angry and go into name calling. Be cool man!

Its FAMILES/DYNASTIES calling the shots in politics everywhere in this world from America to Timbaktu to Singapore, and, why should Malaysia be any different?

Do you know that if Hillary Clinton was running for U.S. presidential race, America could face 28 years with either a Clinton or a Bush in the White House?

Running for public office is family affair and this happens everywhere, even in good old Cuba and China. We should accept the fact that some people are just groomed into the family business from day one and political families know this and often use this to retain their hold on people.

Average citizens look at family politics as normal.

In China, where Mao Zedong rose to power demonizing feudalism, a class of “princelings,” sons of former revolutionary cadres, then rose like feudal lords.

Aung San Suu Kyi, daughter of Burmese independence hero Aung San, became powerful symbols of hope.

Even in Argentina, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner will succeed her husband Néstor as President.

In too many nations worldwide, politics is still, sadly, a family affair.

  • danke

oh dont forget limkitsiang’s son, anwar’s daughter

  • did i use any foul words in my comments? No.
Did i say something that degrades karpal, anwar, and lks and their famly? No.
is it true, dynasty politic is practised in opp too? Yes.
Is it fair enough to say this blogger and some commenters practise double standard? Yes.
    Thanks selvaraja.

    Dear all,

I guess it is pointless to talk to those morons like umnorambaisari, they are all not only in denial mode and ignorance to other races, but care only for their umnoputra… they claim representing Malay…with 3.5mil of memberships…but think again…

Even with their another supporters from a single race but not being members of UMNO of 2.5mil (mainly civil servants and elder folks)…they only approx. at 6mil…of of the entire nation population of 27mil…in percent of less than 25%… with the another portion from BN component party of 1.5mil membership and supporters… still less than 30% of Malaysia polution… do u think r they the majority to rule the country… Definitely NOT!!!

This country did belong to 1 bangsa, we called them Bangsa Malaysia… 70% is majority… i say…

Enough is enough! It’s time now to take back what we suppose to have!

  • marco

bro, politics and dynasty are normal in politics. Just take a look at the so-called democratic Pakistan People’s Party after Benazir Bhutto’s death. Who succeed her? Her son and her husband, Asif Zardawi. and yet they claim to champion democracy.
Take a look at your own party first before complaining on others. Anwar, Wan Azizah, Nurul Izzah?? Kit Siang, Guang Eng??
    Sudahlah.

  • Kenny

Some of you here are avoiding this national issue. It’s not actually about dynasties.

Are not Aung San Su Kyi and Lee Hsien Loong honest and capable patiots? Did not Mao send his own son to his untimely death in the Korean War for China? Are not LGE, Gobind, Azizah and Nurul honest, capable and patriotic Malaysians? Are they joining hands with our evil leaders up there, or are they risking their personal freedom for us armchair critics?

Umnorambaisari and Selvaraja, I’m sure we know about apples and oranges?

Yes, there are dynasties all over. But dynasties are anti-national when power and positions are just handed down on a silver platter; when the princelings have repeatedly not exhibited any ideas or qualities in even running a ministry.

Judging by the past performance, actions and history of our princelings, the creation of a fair and progressive Malaysia is neither on their mind nor is it within their capabilty. Do you guys not mind having incapable noted crooks as leaders? Gotten raped repeatedly and now sending out your children crying out for more?

It is now post epochal March 8, when Malaysians clamoured for change. But the candidates and nominations in progress in UMNO only serve to reinforce the fact that UMNO is an evil party beyond redemption. Good men(if any) in Mahathir’s UMNO Baru always finish last. UMNO Baru is a calamitous dynasty! That also explains our present uncorrected atrocious education system which dumbs down the masses, rendering them to become uninitiated followers.

Let’s hope that whatever little good men left in UMNO/BN would come to their conscience and senses and cross over to Pakatan for the sake of their descendants and the good people of this nation.

  • Dynasties in politics extend throughout the world because the people voted them in. I think voters are expecting more or less the same from the successor as they did from the predecessor, I guess they like familiarity. Even in DAP and PKR :P

So the real question to ask is, does the successor have the ability to lead and be a leader for ALL Malaysians? From the list that you provided above, all of them are more interested in reaffirming the “Malay struggle”.

According to Mukhriz, judiciary reforms are not important to him because it would weaken UMNO and the Malays as a consequence. Of cuz, this is not the least unexpected for someone running for UMNO Youth chief, but is this what we expect from a leader, who could in the future, be a PM himself?

  • in this blog i’m a moron for pointing out dynasties in PKR, DAP.. why are u guys practising double standard..

i would prefer mahathir’s style, he didn’t allow mukhriz to be actively involved in politics while he’s still in power. Yet you call him by all names you can think of..

I am a malay and calling other people moron simply because u disagree with him/her is just so out of adab.

and i bet nat is smiling when people call me moron, that’s half of his job done, others are doing dirty job for him..

i’m carrying this umno name because i believe in the core agendas of UMNO establishment, you guys can’t deny the fact that we are liberated from British are due to UMNO’s persistent in taking over this Malay piece of land back. But British wants other races in this country (whom they brought in) to be acknowledged as citizens as well. And UMNO or malays did just that.. therefore multiracial Malaysia was born.

You might hate the people in UMNO, call them by names or whatsoever, but UMNO is not guilty for some of the leaders greed. Power comes with baggage, not only responsibility.
