Anwar: Debate and Warrant

Well, I thought that was a good watch :)

I think Malaysians would mature exponentially, and life would be more entertaining, if this was only the first of many. In the unlikely event such debates were continued, I think it would really be to the benefit of the whole country.

Well, you probably know roughly what I think of the debate itself (I love how Shabery Chik kept saying ‘percayalah’ and dodged the public transport question completely), the question is: what do YOU think? (you can also vote in MStar poll – the first of many I’m sure)

On another note, there is a warrant out for Anwar’s arrest.

I suppose this doesn’t necessarily mean that they will arrest him, but the thought is disturbing nonetheless. We’ll stay tuned and continue to be vigilant.

Selepas menyaksikan live ” Debat ” tadi jikalau realiti show JANGAN LUPA LIRIK tentu Saudara DSAI dah menangi RM1,000,000.00 dengan senang tetapi bagi Saudara Sabre Chik nak dapat RM500.00 pun susah .Lain ditanya Lain pulak dia jawab . Bak kata pepatah melayu ” HEMTAM SAJA LA LABU ” . Well done Saudara DSAI N good luck tomorrow

  2. Yes I am all for intelligent public debate. It augurs well for our democratic development. We will grow and mature into civilized democratic society to be proud of. No need for paid thugs who are speakers of the house and chief justices that strangles public interests.
So refreshing to be above the dirty politics now being conducted by our bygone political leaders. We don’t want the UNMO Talibans to rule us. We want our issues vented and solutions found. Only then can we move forward as a nation.

  4. Debates are civilised way of solving human problems and any debate among two oppossing political party’s are welcome. We hope more issues will be debated outside parliament, as we find some stupidity taking place all the time. One joker showing abnoxious hand signal and all the shouting matches. Hello, our sweat is paying for all the jokers who go to parliament to play play and no work is done. The rayaat expects parlimentarians to work for the rayaat and not work for themselves. As for DSAI and shabery , needless to say that Anuar is onvincing and shabery is attacking his personel character, which is what BN is capable of.

  5. And the formula to RM1/litre petrol is?

  6. Nat,

Indeed it was a good watch!

    :)

  7. This guy Shabery should go back to high school if he does’nt
know what he is supposed to debate on. He went way out of line and threw personal attacks on Anwar from start to finish. The objective of BN is not to have a healthy debate but, to humiliate DSAI on his past records. Those who attended this historic event must have felt deeply disappointed. Shabery if you do not know how to debate, stay home…you lost your job!

  8. the bloggers should unite to call for such debates to continue! definitely a right step and a very positive one. Overall, I thought both did good. Well nobody doubted Anwar, it is after all his forte. Shabery held his grounds pretty well, I’d say. And he was right on one thing though, I was anticipating Anwar’s answer to his grand promise to reduce fuel price to WAY before this price soar. not some 50cents initial measure nonsence. and the additional 3billions to be sourced from elsewhere….where?

  9. Thanks to Saberi Cheek the only UMNO chap who dare take on Anwar Ibrahim and stand tall to the end.

However, Saberi failed miserably to engage the questions posed by Anwar.

Saberi came with some preconceived ideas about how Anwar was going to engage the issue and he kept on harping on – taking money from Petronas and spending it away – which was NOT what Anwar suggested.

Saberi did not pay much attention to Anwars plans and points given, but instead took all the opportunity to take potshots and attack Anwar when he was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, and, on the process, Saberi, missed much points completely and his argument was poor.

Finally Saberi seem to avoid answering questions posed to him, and chose to give answers to make believe questions, leading a line of attack on Anwar personally, to which he lost his argument again for not sticking to the issue.

Anwar won without a doubt but credit goes to Saberi for trying and opening a new chapter to open debates in Malaysia.

    Good work Saberi!

Well done Datuk Anwar, you really make the Penangites proud.

  10. The debate was totally one side and DSAI was the clear winner.

The basics are very simple, the current BN government has no clue on managing under crisis.

All the points raise were not answered at all by Shabery, especially the part of where the money supposedly saved by the oil subsidy is utilized by the BN government for the rakyat in terms of transportation projects.

The plain point of gradual increase of the petrol price rather than the abrupt increase by 40% is also not gasped by the BN government.

Managing under crisis would basically mean lining up a series of benefits and programs before increasing the oil price but this was NOT done. Now we can see various programs trying to be initiated as an after thought, this clearly shows mismanagement and personal interest at play.

If the BN government is willing to listen to constructive criticism, we should see the price of oil reduced by RM0.50 and measures being implemented in a transparent manner to show the rakyat details and cost reduction and savings of wasteful mega project.

    For a better Malaysia

Kita mahukan para menteri BN bersikap terbuka seperti beliau. Kita mahu lihat debat sihat seperti ini diteruskan. Biarkan rakyat menentukan. Tak kiralah persepsi apa yang mereka ambil. Rakyat kita sudah matang. Rancakkan proses demokrasi dengan debat seperti ini. Tahniah Agendadaily dan yang terlibat menganjurkan debat ini.

  12. Debate yesterday, i don’t support any party but we want our problem to be solved and there is a way to solve the public problem and why goverment don’t want to do solve our problem. Shabery didn’t talk about relevent issues and he didn’t answer the question has been ask to him. He only talk about the past and history that we are not interested to hear, he talk nonsense. Public knows that goverment is not helping but giving a burden to public. They don’t want solve the problem even there is a way to solve it, what a shame to have this kind of goverment.

Anuar has given a good idea and good comments on how to over come public problems. I don’t know if he is good or bad but he knows how to slove it. He is a capable man.

  13. Agree with hands down. AI was very good and articulate whilst Shab a young kid still wet behind his ears.
He was doing what he was told to do…take personal shots at AI. He did his job well in that sense.
As for AI so he promised he can bring down the price of petrol (b4 GE) but realistically, he can to RM0.50 if he uses his theory (he knows his numbers i give him that!) Our current management is kaput and kaputing very badly!

  14. Nat,
Just a clarification on my understanding – there’s a warrant out to arrest Anwar if he refuses to turn up to give his statement.
Its not the same as arresting him on the accusation which he faces, not yet anyway.
I would be surprised if it got to that point, at this moment. Putting together various bits of information which I’ve collected, I don’t think the police have got anything concrete on DSAI.
Whether anything new “surfaces” is another matter.

  15. TOMMY F, if you don’t want that 50cents reduction, then perhaps you should just buy petrol at the curent price, while the rests of us pay RM2.20/liter!!!!

  16. As expected, the debate was lively and to some extent, a civilised discourse despite some potshots at Anwar’s credibility. Even my toddler could predict Anwar will win after watching the first half hour!

The quality of economic discussion could be improved as facts and figures were presented without further analysis. Venezuela is facing major economic problems of hyperinflation because of its currency peg, price controls and years of unbridled monetary expansion thanks to high oil revenues and fiscal spending.

Next debate: Tony Phua/Khalid Ibrahim versus Tan Sri Mohd Noor/KJ on “Malaysia’s Inflation Time Bomb & Currency Policy”.)

  17. Pak Lah & Najib,

As PM & DPM, I just want to say shame on the both of you. Instead of stepping up as a true leader would do, you opted to hide in the background. Your sacrificial lamb in Shabery Cheek, though he failed miserably should be credited for having the balls (which the both of you clearly dont have) to face Anwar.

So, who is next from UMNO-BN?? Hishamuddin?? Samy Vellu??

  18. Hello,

Personally for the debates my comments is similar from the rocky bru’s comment, is that Shabery played the blame game but not that excessively. DSAI Anwar previously was Minister of Finance, so he has no problem in giving such debates. He was indeed a part of the policy-making BN machine.

The Info Minister had reminded Anwar that in 1997 he was subscribing to IMF prescriptions, such as pushing up interest rates sky high, which hurt a lot of business people and the layman.

However both speakers conducted themselves very well. They were not emotional and stuck to the topic.

Hopefully this debate program could be done frequently in the future for food of thoughts for the public and the government towards developing our country.

  21. Friends, let me think on this for a while. In the party manifesto pre election it is mentioned specifically Petronas, but in the debate Anwar denied saying that he meant the tax given to govt. (No knowledge). Ask your local economist or economic lecturer and ask him/her what he/she thinks of the debate and Anwars knowledge. Please do some search on your web browser (yahoo, google whatever you want) and search info on oil refinery/oil wells. They will tell you the process and the difficulty of drilling new wells (if there is anymore in Malaysia?). I was surprised to see the shock in Anwar face when he found out that only minor portions of the profit came from local wells.

Does who talk and those who do. You decide.

  22. You know what strikes me reading the comments here ? Most people are blinded either by their political afflictions and/or their inability to accept the fact that the price of oil has risen far more in the global market than it Malaysia.

The expectation of the debate is very simple. DSAI supposed to provide a formula on how the oil can be still subsidised without affecting the economy / Petronas / long term growth. But DSAI failed miserably.

Firstly he got his calculations all wrong by quoting Rm5 Billion when it should be far more (may be Rm 15 Billion) based on the current oil prices. Secondly the 50 sen he quoted was wrong as this was before the GE and not after the recent price hike. This effectively means that DSAI will increase the price of oil instead of reducing it.

As for SC, he has to defend why the govt has no choice but to increase the price. I think he did a fantastic job in explaining the economic justification.

In my opinion, SC just thrashed DSAI.

However, many people will not accept this as no logical reasons in the world can convince them that the oil subsidy should be reduced.

BTW, please drop this idiotic comparison with Singapore. They are a rich country and we are a Third World one. Obviously they will be better off than us, not just in the price of oil but also in everything else due to their superior GDP/capita.

If we are to use this argument, we also can go back and argue about those countries who are poorer than Malaysia. Though some have cheaper petrol, but because they are poorer so they are even more affected right ?

And the argument about oil exporter is also faulty. If we are not a nett oil exporter, then we would be paying the market price for oil. Don’t compare with Saudi Arabia and Venezuela since our oil revenue (nett) is peanuts compared to them.

Taken from Killer post -sorry did not ask first.

  23. @ One person: Shab completely dodged the question of why the subsidy saved from the previous fuel price increase was so poorly allocated towards public transportation. He also sidestepped a lot of the questions posed to him, instead bringing up the same tired arguments over and over again that Anwar have already counter-argued.

Instead of refuting Anwar’s counter-argument, he instead chose to bring up past history and bring up the same argument again. So how could he have “trashed” Anwar?

Anwar said that his plan did not involve taking a huge chunk out of Petronas’ profits, rather about reducing the government wastage (complete with examples of previous cases), and reducing the buffer capacity from 40% ro 20%.

That may or may not work but Shabery did not address this at all. Instead he brought up rubbish from the past and created an ad hominem argument and comparing our country with others.

Anwar may or may not be right about his points but Shab failed to properly disprove his argument. Hence, he could not have won the debate, let alone “trash” his opponent.

Mind you, this argument is about whether who convincingly won the debate rather than whether Anwar was right or wrong.
