Update 8pm – I thought of what else I can write on this, but it’s not easy. Like Rocky, I’ll just reproduce:
Pic of Aina at school (right).
Dear YB Syed Hamid Albar
Home Minister
Re: Aina Mardiah Shahrial, 17
You may not know Aina, she is the eldest daughter of Shahrial Sirin, an ISA detainee. On the afternoon of July 2, about 3 pm, she was admitted into Kajang Hospital. The girl was fighting for her life. The family immediately informed authorities at Kamunting, where her father had been detained for the last 7 years.
Somehow, Shahrial was only told of her daughter’s illness at 10.30 am the next day, July 3. Aina’s mother made a personal appeal to the authorities at Kamunting to let her daughter be with the dad for the last time. The doctors said Aina had only a few hours of life left, God-willing.
The authorities at Kamunting said they could not release Shahrial. They had to get your signature on the release papers. Yes, YB, your precious signature.
Aina’s father was finally released at 5pm. It was the longest four-hour journey to Kuala Lumpur.
Shahrial got to her daughter’s side at 9.45 pm. He was too late. Aina had passed away at 6.20pm without seeing her father.
Thank you, YB, and may Allah bless you and your family.
pic: A father’s belated good-bye
Norlaila Othman, a wife of an ISA detainee herself (read here), told me that the Abolish ISA Movement will be writing to Syed Hamid so that the Minister knows about the father and daughter. And that besides love, sometimes all we need is a bit of common sense.
Read the Harakah.net’s report here. And Tehsin’s Detention without trial: The Ultimate Obsenity
Update 4.45pm – See Rocky for a completely heartbreaking account of the family tragedy endured by an ISA detainee. I’m too crushed to say anymore for now.
Thanks Mr. Mugam, for the point.
DETENTION under the Internal Security Act (ISA) is geared more towards rehabilitation rather than criminal punishment.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar told M. Manogaran (DAP – Teluk Intan) that ISA detainees would be rehabilitated in regard to their extremist beliefs and actions, which could threaten national security.
“Those held under the ISA will undergo a rehabilitation programme at their place of detention.
“If a detainee has been considered to be rehabilitated and no longer poses any danger to the country, he or she will be released,” he said in a written reply.
Really? Well, we have a lot of ex-ISA detainees out there we can use as test of rehabiliation effectiveness: Anwar (when he was younger than me), Kit Siang, Syed Husin, Tian, Guan Eng..
How’s that rate of success coming eh?
I wouldn’t quite consider Ezam a successful case of Kamunting rehabilitation either.
And you think Uthayakumar is going to come out and join MIC.
Don’t be stupid, be just; no more detention without trial.

ISA detainees would be rehabilitated in regard to their extremist beliefs and actions, which could threaten national security.
……………………………………………………
And since you are an extremist, who will rehabilitate you as well? Unfortunately he is one of the prized UMNO intellectuals.
Hello Nat,
Yet, the ISA detainees is not being given their fundamental rights. A resource from the Rocky Bru (http://rockybru.blogspot.com/2008/07/when-isa-detainees-daughter-dies.html) stated that Aina Mardiah Shahrial, 17 is the eldest daughter of Shahrial Sirin, an ISA detainee died before had the chance to see her father.

Its so sad and pity. I have no words for Syed Hamid.
”’Anwar (when he was younger than me), Kit Siang, Syed Husin, Tian, Guan Eng..”
They all turned out quite good after the rehabilitation…
Anwar – from the first ISA stint, he later turned into the DPM, and also prime minister-in-waiting. But then, he had to go in again, because the ISA counselors forgot to teach him a thing or two about corruption.
So, they rehabilitated him again
Then Anwar came out again. You can hear his rhetoric of democracy and transparency. He then again, right now, becomes the PM in waiting. That ISA counselors are world-class because people are saying Anwar can never change.
One mistake the ISA counselors did was they never touched the subject of sodomy. They didn’t believe it when Mahathir said it, they thought corruption was the main problem. Now, they need to take him in again to teach him a thing or two about sodomy.
Next, Tian Chua,
He is a naughty kid, he like to run over people on full speed and superimpose picture, Naughty, naughty. So, he needs to go in again,
3rd, Lim Guan Eng.
He do not believe in law and order. He likes to make accusations without proof, and even if he has proof, he withholds it. So, he needed some rehabilitation He was sent in. While he was in, they also made him attend so leadership talks. Guan Eng has changed now. He accuses BN of being corrupt, but he says he only will make a report when he finds the evidence. The leadership talks he attended has groomed him to be a Chief Minister. Wow.
NAt, I think you should apply to enter the ISA. You might turn out less idealistic and more realistic, and maybe even become the PM of Zimbabwe.:P
ps- you are very biased against the government. The moment they mentioned ‘rehabilitation’, you assumed that they are doing it for the good of BN. BN can also be selfless, as seen above.
this is a really sad day for Malaysia. political or criminal detainee, rehabilitated or not, should not be deprived of such basic mercy of humanity. I really expect something grave from Syed Hamid, he better not just brush this off.
The father should be given an opportunity to see his daughter.
he wasn’t planning to do anything dangerous to the country, he just wants to see the daughter who’s in the death bed waiting to see him.
To Syed Hamid…my anger is beyond words.
hopefully Pakatan Rakyat will
formed the federal government
come Sept 2008.
Father is quilty – said Home Minister.
Is the daughter also quilty? – HOME COOK MINISTER?
Rajraman. There is no soul in this HUMAN CALL AS HOME MINISTER.
This anti-anwar commenter must be some sick Umno goon – he likes ISA so much. Why don’t he enroll and live there for some years n come out n tell us how it is like.
If he is anti-anwar I can understand but liking the evil dreaded ISA.
Let’s abolish ISA for good now.
What to know what I think of this person???There are no words to describe this person…except that he is an animal
Hamid Albar seems to be one of the best in twist and turn games. No point to expect him to speak truth.
Where is the human compassion
Even in the daughter’s final hours
Yet we only see the inhuman compression
Even if the daughter is really ours

I really speechless. Is this how they treat those who disent and disagree? To break them down with with tactics no better than the Nazi Gestapo? We’re talking about a man who’s denied to see is dying daughter. It’s just really messed up that they choose to stoop to really plain cruel tactics to force out a ‘rehabilitation/ in them.
I really really hope Syed Hamid knows how to answer God when He asks him about all this!
Animal? This is too kind a word for a shithead. My good nature is restraining me to describe him appropriately. Son of a medicine man, go and sell your father’s rubbish in the night bazaar …Botak, you are a blooming fraud!
ISA should be abolished. How can someone be detained without trial. This is pure abuse of power.
My condolence to Shahrial and family. I feel your pain of not being able to see your daughter in her last moments.
To the authorities – Is it right and humane to do this to someone? Put yourselves in the vicim’s shoes. Can you sleep peacefully at night?
My heartfelt condolence to Shahrial, his wife & family for this unnecessary inhumane sufferings imposed by the Home Affairs Minister & his Ministry/Department’s attitude.
To deprive a father’s anguish to see his 17 year daughter in her dying moments.
This is Barbaric even in the present Bolehland !
May Allah have mercy on you all !
you guys need to get a life. No where did I mention that I support the ISA. This minister just said that ISA is used to rehabilitate people, since Nat did not understand how ISA rehabilitated people. I choose to explain to him the success of ISA until today. No where did I mention that ISA is good for all.
Might think of publishing a retraction of your piece on Nurul Izzah’s arrest. Getting all dramatic for nothing. This is how rumours start and spiral out of control. Angering people on such baseless allegations. This is not being responsible. Using every single chance to take a swipe at the police force. A retraction is necessary. For the sake of accountability of course.
RETRACT, RETRACT!!!!!!!
If not we send u to ISA!! :P
