Ali Rustam hacked? Or Ali Rustam the hack?

The Star:

Though less than a month old, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam’s blog has come under attack from hackers.

He confirmed that mohdalirustam.blogspot.com encountered some technical problems yesterday and was temporarily inaccessible.

“There have been many people disturbing my blog including hacking it but never mind, let them do so,” he said.

Sigh, if you don’t understand the internet, don’t make sweeping statements.

Have you ever, in your entire life, heard of a Blogspot.com site getting hacked? As one of the world’s most important websites, I’d consider it virtually unhackable.

Just a bit of explanation for the laymen: hacking is when you invade a website and mess around with it. All websites like mohdalirustam.blogspot.com or politikus.wordpress.com are what we call subdomains of the parent website – in this case blogspot.com and wordpress.com.

Therefore, as I understand it, one cannot ‘hack’ a subdomain without hacking the main website. Major websites have extreme layers of protection, because they are extremely high profile.

If you want to read about hacked websites, try what happened to KeADILan’s websites during the election.

So, why would Ali Rustam (besides being technologically inept) be making such silly statements? As usual, we look to Malaysiakini for answers:

Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam has removed hundreds of comments left on his weblog after his posting on the Selangor centralised pig farm came under fire from readers.

The entry in Bahasa Malaysia was entitled ‘Pig farm, a gift from the elections’ and was posted last Friday.

It prompted 365 readers to leave comments as at 3pm yesterday when Malaysiakini first visited the blog site.

Mohd Ali – who is also Umno vice-president – congratulated Selangor voters including Muslims for voting in the Pakatan Rakyat government, which decided to implement the project originally conceived by Barisan Nasional.

An overwhelming majority criticised Mohd Ali – who joined the bandwagon of bloggers this month – as ‘short-sighted’ and ‘playing up racial sentiments’.

On re-visiting the blog 30 minutes later, Malaysiakini found that the comments had been removed and that the comment-posting function had been disabled. However, a screen capture copy was subsequently obtained.

Read the comments, and a much more plausible explanation comes to light.

Ali Rustam got whacked left right and center, and when they couldn’t take it any more, they just deleted the comments system :|

They should take a cue from anwaribrahimblog.com, where limitless unflattering comments are approved daily.

  1. Nat, blogspot is hackable. If you know who is Xia Xue, a famous singaporean blogger.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xiaxue#Controversies

Her blog was hacked back in 2005 and she got famous because of that.

BTW, Ali Rustam has removed that controversial post in his blog, but no worries, we now have a cloned blog here.

  2. Latest:.. he removed the blog entry on that babi issue altogether…

  3. Get a real life Ali Rustam . At least Pak Lah had done something useful last night at the Bar Council’s dinner compared to what you had done since becaming the KM Melaka.

BTW , your blog site is not worth to be hacked . Bloggers would prefer to wack you instead through your blog site.

  4. Humans can be hacked pretty easily. There’s an adage in computer security that if you ask users to pick between security and dancing monkeys, they’ll pick dancing monkeys every time. Humans can be tricked into letting an intruder take control of their computer, or find out their passwords. If someone was slightly determined to bring that blog down, and the admin was stupid enough not to use a half-decent password (i.e. not a dictionary word or other common sequence like 123456789), no amount of security could have saved it.

Having said that, if that’s what really happened, Rustam completely deserved it. I don’t know if statesmen who can’t come up with proper passwords or install antivirus programs on their own computers deserve to be running the country. :p

  5. Well to say you got hacked – brings a more pompous atmosphere as you must be very imp person or a great website in order to get hacked.
Maybe he was just being ignorant, to them internet is a ‘JUNGLE”.
Previously they only knew how to condemn bloggers.
They themselves being naive, dumb, ignorant.

  6. Wakakaka..wakakaka..wakakaka.. Ali Rustam so stuuuupid… wakakaka..wakakaka…

  7. omg… Ali Rustam has something in common with Xia Xue… it’s a sign of the impending apocalypse, the end is nigh.

  8. Xiaxue’s blog was not hacked but someone guessed her email password and got into her blog, if I remember correctly.

AliRustam the blogger is a complete moron. I believed his blog was locked by Blogger temporarily (and not hacked as he claimed) because of surfers complaints. I too made a complaint. You can flag blogspot blogs if you find their contents disagreeable, as in being racist (like AliRustam’s post). All you need is to click on the flag at the top left corner. If you are not satisfied and has a blogger’s account, you can submit a complaint form to Blogger.

Someone (not me!) has made a clone blog of AliRustam.

A lot of surfers will be mis-directed to the wrong one because mostly Malaysian surfers are clueless. People have mistaken my personal blog for Warkah untuk Pak Lah and also Khir Toyo blog and left comments like it is their blog. *roll eyes*
