Anwar on the NEP

I used to think it’d be a bit passe to paste DSAI stuff here that I figured everyone knew.

I have since learnt not to take such things for granted. For those still unsure of the KeADILan position on the NEP and views on the economy, do check out the article below.

Also, check out the official KeADILan respitory of documents that relate to these positions.

My standing may ‘compromise’ this comment somewhat, but I will still say it: it takes guts to put your neck on the line and take these positions in a country like this.

But it has become a matter of principle. If something doesn’t work, or has become corrupted beyond recognition - it’s time to throw it out. In this case, regardless of the painful (and very real) costs, it has to be principles first, politics second.

I still haven’t responded to some queries left on this blog, a million apologies! Time, time… :( But it’s still on my mind!

(AFP) Malaysia losing investment over pro-Malay policies: Anwar

HONG KONG (AFP) — One of Malaysia’s leading opposition figures said Thursday the country was losing out economically to regional rivals because of long-running policies favouring ethnic Malays.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia’s ability to attract foreign investment had been compromised by keeping the country’s affirmative action policies in favour of the Malay majority.

That policy is obsolete… We are losing our competitiveness. Malaysia is less competitive than the 1990s,” Anwar, whose Keadilan party is formally led by his wife, told reporters in Hong Kong.

Foreign investments, we have lost. Growth, we have lost. Attractiveness, which is key to an emerging market, is lost.

Not to China and India, but to Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia because of our obsolete policies. If you persist in pursuing this agenda, you do it not only at the expense of the Chinese and the Indians, but also of the Malays.

Malaysia has pursued the policies for Malays and indigenous groups known as “bumiputras” since the 1970s to close a wealth gap with the minority Chinese community.

In recent months, the government has been shaken by rare public demonstrations which erupted last November, including against alleged discrimination against Malaysia’s ethnic Indians.

Anwar added that Malaysia’s creeping “Islamisation” was also turning away foreign investors.

Malaysia has experienced a string of religious controversies in recent months.

A Catholic newspaper was banned from using the word “Allah”, or “God”, in its Malay language section, while a Hindu woman lost her bid to stop the conversion of her child to Islam after Malaysia’s highest court ruled that her now-Muslim husband can convert their elder son.

Anwar was sacked from the former government of Mahathir Mohamad in 1998 after being jailed for six years following sodomy and corruption charges.

The sodomy charge was later overturned and Anwar was released but he is barred from public office or holding any position with a political party until April because of the corruption conviction.

  1. Sudah lah DSAI! He was part of the system run with Mahathir & UMNO. One beating doesn’t make him a democrat. He didnot allow democracy in his so-called “party” by all accounts I have read. I don’t like the NEP anymore than you but I would not place my trust in Anwar and his ilk.

  2. Jantan:

I’m no more a fan of DSAI than your average Malaysian, but if the choice is between a presently corrupt UMNOrista who brandishes a keris threatening bloodshed and a once-corrupt (but potentially could still be corrupt) UMNOrista who says things have to change, I’ll go out on a limb and go for the guy who might actually be clean and might actually fix something.

Or, in fewer words, voting BN is voting for a surely racist and corrupt institution. Voting PKR/DAP is voting for a possibly racist and corrupt institution, but one that is also possibly non-racist and sincere. The choice seems quite clear to me.

  3. NEP’s creation was by all means necessary in the 70s.

But the world is very much a different place now. We have better knowledge and today we even have JELAS INFO.

Its really a detriment to all races now, the chinese hates it, the indians fighting over it and the makes the Malay depending on it(although not all). Who loves it is merely the cronies bunch.

I think the Malays are ready to get rid of NEP and embrace the world. In fact we even have a Malay outside the world (Angkasawan). Its not about the question of race, its about how you want to make Malaysia Better.

The only Race that can succeed is the Malaysian Race.
Differenciating people based on skin colour will only make you loose out. And that’s exactly whats happening in Malaysia right here right now.

  4. Lots of anti-Anwar Ibrahim propaganga when election impends. Just like the old days mate, just like the old days.

  5. Here we have a lot of dirty linen. I was informed that DSAI had washed these dirty linen at home, but I think not enough was being done. DSAI should not have washed these dirty linen in Hong Kong, as this was of no benefit to Malaysia at all.

  6. DSAI should not have washed these dirty linen in Hong Kong, as this was of no benefit to Malaysia at all.

Dirty linen is dirty linen. It should be washed anywhere and anytime.

In M`sia they don`t wash at all going by this:

Lazar:(ABOVE) Is the Commission saying the fixing of cases and their outcome is outside the terms of reference?
    Haidar: Yes, its outside.
Lazar: Does this also mean our earlier submission on the alleged fixing of cases is disallowed?
Haidar: Yes, it is disallowed. We hope with the decision, it will now enlighten the counsels the direction that they should take.

  8. Off topic:

Instead of concentrating on dethroning BN, two idiots - Dr Lee Boon Chye and YB Lim Kit Siang - seem to think GE 2008 is about one seat.

    See proof here: http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/77459

For that, both of them don’t deserve out vote!
