Do our police guarantee peace and security?

Updated 9.50pm with Malaysiakini article: 13% hike in violent crime last year!! See bottom of post for details.

Our IGP via The Star:

The present generation should appreciate the peace and security they enjoy now as it was achieved through the deeds and sacrifices of members of the security forces, including the Royal Malaysian Police”

Being a policeman almost anywhere is a noble calling, no doubt.

But I’m not sure exactly which peace and security the IGP would have me enjoy.

Does he mean the (lack of) peace and security I ‘enjoy’ walking down the streets of even affluent neighbourhoods at night? My mom did once, and she got attacked and robbed.

Does he mean the (lack of) peace and security ‘enjoyed’ by Nurin? Whose killer, lest we forget, is still at large.

He also said people who attempted to create commotion and chaos in the country could be considered traitors.

Indeed.

But commotion and chaos are caused by politicians who send cops to intimidate peaceful assemblies when they should be patrolling the streets.

Commotion and chaos are caused by politicians who wave their kerises threateningly to keep certain Malaysians “in their place.”

There have been two instances in as many weeks where people have been prevented from meeting me due to fear.

Can you imagine? Too scared to meet cuddly, teddy bear me because of fear that the police would then mark them?

Well, I guess we have to chalk it up as a success of the Polis Raja Di Malaysia, for guaranteeing the peace and security…. of Umno-BN.

Malaysiakini:

There has been a marked 7.1% spike in crime last year, according to the latest crime index released by the police today.

The index, which is a total number of reported crime cases, show that a dramatic 13.4% increase in violent crimes alone from 2006.

The highest spike involved gang robbery without using firearms - the number grew from 2,723 cases in 2006 to 7,076 cases in 2007 – a whopping 159.5% jump.

The following are the percentage of increase in selected crimes for 2007:

Rape – 3,177 cases (+ 29.5%)

Outraging modesty – 2,320 (+ 12.4%)

Night-time home break-in – 24,440 (+ 21.7%)

Day break-in – 9,159 (+4.2%)

Motorcycle theft – 67,854 (+ 3.2%)

Car theft – 12,427 (+ 11.4%)

Snatch theft – 11,127 (+0.5%)

Other theft – 44,617 (+ 5.1%)

Rioting – 2,608 (+ 13.8) / ?!?!?!?!

What’s PM going to do about it?

• Compelling private property owners to install close-circuit cameras (CCTV)

On the installation of CCTVs, Abdullah said the matter would be coordinated by the Local Government and Housing Ministry.

He added that property owners or tenants who refuse to comply with the regulation would have “appropriate action” taken against them.

“If you want to fight crime, you have to pay,” Abdullah said.

O_O

I disagree, if we want to fight crime, I think we have to get rid of Abdullah.

under him, the crime rate soared to the sky. he was still in denial until there was a hue and cry from the public in Johor. but crime rate continues to rise. yet, resources are being abused for the benefit of politicians from the ruling party. really, under the present circumstances of limited resources, it is a mockery for the police to even consider a door to door seach for CSL video.
Mr IGP, we simple folks have a simple request which is to live in safety and peace and not torture by the fear of crime. Thats all I ask for and I hope is not too overwhelming for you.

  • I read with DISGUST two news article from the government controlled, The Star. Why am I disgusted? You see, in the first news, bloggers were helping trying to find out where the kidnap victim. Then our smart MALAYSIAN POLICE were irritated stating their reason as being, the bloggers would jeopardise the victim’s life. (See News 1). That was on the 30th of November 2007.

After a few days, it was noted that the police have formed a special task force to track down the ruthless and notorious gang that has so far kidnapped and raped two women. Now, the police can annouce publicly that they are hunting the gang. So now, the police is jeopardising all would be kidnap victims! Bloodily Foolish move! So, folks, please avoid being kidnapped because the police have ANNOUCED that they are after this gang and since the gang knows that the police is after them, kidnap victim’s lifes are at stake.

What a swell move, you all, police!

RM3,000 ransom paid to free kidnapped woman
SHAH ALAM: A 25-year-old woman who was kidnapped from her office car park in Glenmarie, Subang, near here, was freed after her family paid a RM3,000 ransom.
The woman, who was kidnapped by three men at about 8.30am on Wednesday, was released at about 7.30am in a housing estate in Cheras after the money was paid.
Her family members picked her up and sent her to a hospital for a medical check-up.
Police have quizzed several people who they believe could help them in their investigations.
The woman’s kidnapping was witnessed by several people and the news spread like wildfire when they sent out SMSes urging the public to be on the lookout for a Toyota Camry with the registration number 7641 driven by the kidnappers.
The message also urged the public to contact the police or a particular cellphone number.
However, several bloggers went further by posting the woman’s photograph, much to the ire of the police who felt the action could have jeopardised the woman’s life.
Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed the woman’s release and said investigations were in progress.

    Squad to hunt ruthless gang
    By RASHITHA A. HAMID

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have formed a special task force to track down a ruthless and notorious gang that has so far kidnapped and raped two women.
Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said the task force headed by state CID chief Senior Asst Comm II Mazlan Mansor has already started its work.
“What we can say so far is that there is a pattern in the manner in which both kidnapping-cum-rape cases occurred.
“The only difference is that in both cases different cars fitted with false registration number plates were used,” he said.
The gang first kidnapped a 25-year-old woman from a car park in Glenmarie near Shah alam at about 8.30am on Nov 28.
The victim was released in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, the next day after her family paid the RM3,000 ransom demanded.
The second incident happened on Sunday when a graphic designer with a Chinese daily was kidnapped and gang-raped near her home in USJ6, Subang Jaya.
The woman offered the kidnappers RM1,000 to release her but the gang wanted more money.
They contacted the victim’s mother and demanded another RM4, 000. The older woman could only raise RM2,000 and deposited the money into her daughter’s account.
The kidnappers released the victim after withdrawing the ransom money.

  • What are the police doing? After less than 3 weeks,
there was another kidnapping being reported. http://www.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2007/12/8/nation/19703743&sec=nation

Come on, please wake up lah IGP. What the hell are you doing ?

Kidnapped restaurateur freed, cops recover ransom
KUALA LUMPUR: A restaurant owner kidnapped in Brickfields on Sunday and confined in a house in Cheras for five days, was shoved out of car near a hospital after a ransom was paid.
A special team from the city police headquarters serious crime division, trailed the men who picked up the ransom, arrested four suspects and recovered the RM100,000 paid to the kidnappers.
The 40-year-old restaurant owner was pushed out of a car near Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM) in Bandar Tun Razak at about 2am.
The restaurant owner sought treatment at the hospital before he was reunited with his family.
Sources said the victim told police that he had been blindfolded and was continuously assaulted throughout his confinement.
It is learnt that the kidnappers instructed the family to drop off the ransom money at a pre-arranged spot near HUKM before they released the victim.
The police trailed the men who took the bag with the money and nabbed the four unemployed suspects, all in the 20s, in separate locations in the Klang Valley.
The restaurant owner was abducted by four parang-wielding men at about 4am on Dec 2 as he was walking to his shop.

  • Nat, since you mentioned about Nurin,

the IGP suggested that Nurin’s Parents are Negligent (See News 1). But for Nor Amira Fatihah Mohammad Rosdi’s parents, their parents are not under probe (see News 2). I highlighted earlier that the police did not approve of bloggers showing the pictures of kidnapped victims but for Nor Amira’s case, it seems that different set of law applies to MCA where MCA can distribute 200 photos of Nor Amira (see News 2).

IGP: Parents under probe for negligence

PUTRAJAYA: Nurin Jazlin Jazimin’s parents are being investigated for possible negligence.

Jazimin Abdul Jalil and Norazian Bistaman may face charges under the Child Protection Act if investigations show that their negligence had contributed to Nurin’s death.

“The search for Nurin is over and now we will focus on catching the killer and see if the parents had been negligent in looking after her safety,” said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan.

    “This is a two-pronged investigation.”

Asked if Nurin’s parents could be the first to be charged under the legislation, he said police would first need to establish if there was evidence of negligence.

“If there are, we will make recommendations to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.”

Musa said while there was a provision under the law to charge negligent parents, it had never been used.

“It is high time for parents to be more responsible for their children’s safety,” he said after briefing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and the Police Commission on efforts to enhance the force.

On investigations to nab the killer, Musa said there were strong leads but declined to elaborate. He also said police had increased patrols in several areas in the city, including Chow Kit, Kampung Baru and Masjid India.

    Girl, 12, rescued from house

KULIM: Nor Amira Fatihah Mohammad Rosdi, 12, has been found, 10 days after she was reportedly kidnapped after a Quran class.

Her mother Asmah Ismail, 45, received a tip-off that Nor Amira was held in a house in Nagalilit in Padang Serai and rushed there yesterday with seven relatives to rescue her.

They found the girl safe and sound but looking confused,

Nor Amira had been staying with a family at the house.

Safe and sound: Nor Amira (second from left) with her parents Asmah and Mohammad Rosi Md Noh and Supt Ghuzlan.
“We were allowed into the house, which was full of people. At first, my daughter appeared confused and frightened.

“Then I hugged her and told her to follow me home and we brought her out of the house. Nobody tried to stop us,” a relieved Asmah said at her Taman Kota Kenari home yesterday.

She added that some strangers approached her at her house on Wednesday night to inform her of her daughter’s whereabouts.

On Wednesday, the Kulim/Bandar Baru MCA service team distributed about 200 photographs of Nor Amira in Padang Serai town and here in a move to help locate her.

It was reported earlier that Nor Amira was abducted while waiting for her mother to pick her up from a Quran reading class in Taman Kenari on Dec 3.

She was waiting for her mother at about 8pm when a couple in a white Proton Iswara Aeroback picked her up and drove off.

Kulim acting OCPD Deputy Supt Ghuzlan Salleh said that police picked up a 40-year-old man at about 9am in Kulim town yesterday.

Police also took statements from Nor Amira and her mother.

“Although Nor Amira appeared traumatised, she has not been physically hurt or abused,” he said.

“We are not certain about the motive for the kidnapping but will be recording statements from a few more people.”

on our days off, hubby and i frequent a resturant near where we live. since there is quite a large police operation centre near that restaurant, we get to see many policemen having the same breakfast as we do. boy oh boy, u guys should really see these cops… with their pot bellies and sluggish appearance, its a wonder how they even manage to do their jobs.

the same friend who absolutely refused to come see you last night is often fearful to be seen with me on saturdays. why? because i wear my yellow t-shirt proudly on saturdays.

i asked him once, should we fear the cops so much… when they are the very ones who are supposed to protect us?

two days ago, another friend went to a police station to file a police report… the cop on duty actually had the gall to tell her that he was tired and is in dire need for a nap.. thus he will not be able to help her now. and of course, he also directed her to another police station. i cant really give u the specifics because my friend does not want to highlight her case. but i’ll tell u this, the girl was roaring mad.

If you have made a donation to the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) movement, the police may be knocking on your door soon.

  • hi Nat,

first time commenting here – I should, no, I will, shoot you an email sometime soon, just for kicks. :o)

But in the meantime, reading this post of yours I couldn’t help but chip in.

My answer your question “Do our police guarantee peace and security?” is…. (drumrrrrroll): Hella NO!!!

I’d even venture to say that they might very well sometimes be the perpetrators of our peace and security.

    Case in point:
    http://www.flixster.com/video.do?videoId=10725018
    (originally found on: http://oh-chineng.blogspot.com/)
(the commenatary is hilarious, btw, gotta admire someone who can keep their sense of humour in times of terror. Also, I’d like to add that I do not for a moment doubt the veracity of this video, which took place in (maybe not quite so anymore) charming Pulau Pinang).

So if a 17-year old gets told by the police “You nak I tunjuk kuasa saya?” (not in a benign way, but rather, in a seemingly threatening sounding way) in response to their temerity in questioning authority (legimately & wisely, I might add) you’d think that the “bad guys” who actually do the “bad” stuff would get it worse right, and we’d have a decrease in the rate of crime, right? Haha. ha. (Answer: Wrong!) silly me….. :o)

This above occurence might be but an *cough cough* anomalous snapshot of our ahli Polis Diraja Malaysia usual role in society — but still, it begs the question, with the increasing crime rate, just what were these policemen doing with their time?! (wasting it, imho…. “just for $hits and giggles” is the phrase that comes to mind!).

Well that’s all I have for now.

    in solidarity,
    Marie

for next year stats, cases against contributors to HINDRAF will be included as violent crimes as HINDRAF is purported linked to terrorist organisations according to the authorities except for SAMY VELLU. although crime rate will soar further after inclusion of these cases, but police efficiency went up coz % of crime cases solved improved as all the contributors to HINDRAF were identified and incacerated.
The people of malaysia must appreciate the peace accorded by the police.

Malaysian foreign policy goes to the dogs and the Tourism Ministry had best stop advertising:

    Confront Malaysia
The Pioneer Edit Desk (Jan. 9, 2008)

The Government of Malaysia is rapidly taking its anti-Indian and anti-India bias — which is really official policy to stamp out Hindu culture, faith and identity from that Muslim majority country — to absurd limits. On Tuesday, the Malaysian Government has made public its offensive policy of imposing a ban on Indian workers, including temple priests. It is believed that the work permits of Indians who are working in Malaysia will not be renewed. A ban has also been imposed on employing “non-Malaysian” in airports. Curiously, this obnoxious decision was taken on December 18, but kept under wraps — possibly because the Malaysian Government did not want to derail Defence Minister AK Antony’s visit to Kuala Lumpur from which Malaysians stand to gain by way of India training their security forces.
