Police beat up innocent bystander at Bersih Rally - Pics & Eyewitness account

With apologies to Malaysiakini:

Aleyasak Hamid Ali Hassan, a pisang goreng seller, offers incontrovertible proof that police had used excessive force in dispersing the Bersih rally for electoral reform in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday.

“I just wanted to see - to observe - this rally that people had been talking about. I wasn’t wearing yellow that day, I was wearing black, and it never even crossed my mind to participate in the rally,” said Aleyasak, 31, who lives in Kajang, Selangor.

I also never imagined I would end up with a knee smashed by those who are supposed to be protecting the people against violence.”

“A group of protestors near Masjid Jamek ran towards City Hall (in Jalan Raja Laut). I saw a number of police officers chasing then. They were all running towards where I happened to be standing.

“People were yelling ‘Run! Run!’ so I got scared and turned to run as well.”

Aleyasak did not get very far. After a few metres, he lost his footing on the slippery rain-washed pavement and fell face forward on the pedestrian walkway.

Seconds later, he was set upon by four to six uniformed police officers.

While several held his head to the ground, another officer stepped on Aleyasak’s left leg which had folded at the knee behind him.

“He was applying his weight on it. I heard my knee cracking, then, I head a ‘pop’ sound. I knew right away it was broken,” said Aleyasak.

Ordered to stand up, he told the police officers that his leg was broken. Instead of being carried, he was subjected to foul language and told to walk unaided towards a police truck waiting nearby.

He said: “I was told ‘Why should we carry you? Are you so special to receive that kind of treatment? You’re just a nuisance!’.

One officer - I don’t remember any of the names or numbers on their uniforms - kicked my injured leg and it slammed against part of the truck. Another detainee already in the truck felt sorry for me and helped me to get into the vehicle.”

Following surgery on Monday, Aleyasak was told it would take three to six months for his knee to heal. However, he will have to wait a full year before doing any sports activities or exercises.

“I won’t be able to work for the next few months in my condition,” he said, appearing resigned to the situation.

Angry yet? >:(

I am.

  1. That is why we American believe in guns. Guns protect us common people, not police. Police only bully common people. And your country James Wong (a parliament member) critised America gun laws inside out, outside in.
I hope he now realize why guns are so important to Americans !

  2. um, i have to say i’m not a supporter of guns.

also, i forgot to mention in your blog sorry, james wong is no longer an MP :) when he was sworn in, he was about my age almost. now he’s probably about my dad’s :)

nice guy tho, funny ‘fler :)

  3. Wow these fellas are friggin animals man. This is no laughing matter man. These people need to be made an example of. Brutality like that is just not funny. And this pisang goreng fellar needs to be given some assistance. Not being able to work for 3 months must be really devastating.

  4. i am not sure how,but SUHAKAM needs to read this.pleaese please forward Aleyasak story to suhakam and other relevant agencies.

I am sure there is more than Aleyasak who has been subjected to police force.

  5. Instead of lending a helping hand
They are now guilty of breaking a leg
How can they be still regarded as a friend
When their worth is less than that of a cloth peg?

  6. Horrible…..

Show it to Zainuddin Maidin, Nazri Aziz and Pak Lah. Ask them what sort of Democracy (5 years election) is this.

Ask Zam, why does he say we are not the same as Myanmar and Pakistan?

Get him to answer, why not the same? And he dare to scold Aljazeera some more.. Sheesh.

    Regards,

  7. saddest thing is, aleyasak is not angry. he is instead remorseful for even being kepoh to attend, he’s not super angry at the cops at all. and his family is now frustrated at his predicament and at him mostly … not the cops or govt.

    :(

  8. what a joke

  9. democracy malaysian style.. indeed

  10. This is further evidence that Malaysia is now degenerating faster than ever before.
Malaysia can be properly called a “Police State”, not all policemen are thugs in uniform, but many are.
The general public are treated like hard criminals whilst the real criminals are free to do as they please.
Police brutality is total unacceptable in a democracy, so this proves that Malaysia is truly undemocratic.
The statement by Ambassador Thierry Rommel’s was spot on, he peeled back the veneer and exposed the festering sores beneath.
The people should take more action so as to clean up the filth via appropriate peaceful means.

  11. But Zaaam said the police didn’t even use baton. Only water and tear gas.

  12. Now I wonder, why were there no cameras at those cruel moments to record this police brutality? Like those racially motivated police brutality episodes recorded on tape in America? How’s that for our govt-in-denial to swallow? Bring out your cameras with you all the time.

There is no need to be angry, for anger would hurt your health. Turn it into resolve and determination for the struggle to come.

  13. The Battle at Wounded Knee, Malaysian style. Goreng pisang seller. How totally appropriate! It just wasn’t this guy’s day. But they say “Bapak borek, anak rintik” (Like Father, Like Son) - and who’s the “Bapak” of the Polis Di Raja Malaysia? Isn’t it the Home Minister? Is he at Home??? If you get mauled by a vicious dog, you find out who the owner is and file a suit.

  14. How much longer can the rakyat tolerate this UMNO led government?

  15. This is a real tragedy. I also happened to watch the youtube video between Malaysia’s Information Minister’s interview and Al Jazeera, and it was very embarrassing. Very.

  16. Curiosity kills the cat!

  17. I screamed.

    I ran.

I came out of MJ unscathed.

Signs of an experienced, or cowardly, gua bay song.

Rais Yatim contohnya.

  19. Why would innocent citizen refuse the right to be gun owners to protect themselves is a mind boggling stupidity to any rational and just mind.

The outlaws will always have their guns - whether you like it or not.

And if you depend on the police of the state to protect you, you are most deluded and deceived.

The right to self-ptrotection is the fundamental rights of every man.

Don’t worry about the abuse of guns. There are adequate laws to deal with it.

  20. I agree with Yacob – it was really embarrassing to hear our “esteemed” information minister speaking to the Al-Jazeera news. My niece spoke better English when she was 3 years old. I was cringing in horror – the world heard this???!!! Well, I suppose the world already thinks that Malaysians are like that – I mean listen to what pops out of Nazri’s mouth … can anything else sound dumber than that??

  21. having lived for a while in america, europe and malaysia,
as much as i despise malaysian cops that abuse their power, im glad that i dont live in a gun society like america where a six-year can get easily accidently shot.

Compare gun victim statistics of countries like america and pakistan with those of malaysia and the hard facts speak for themselves.
guns are as much a sick disease of society as much as cocaine and terrorism.

that aside, we must make this a national issue.
the police cannot alow their amuk and frustration on people like that.

  22. I want to make a small contribution to Aleyasak medical expenses as a token of appreciation to his presence at the rally whether intentionally or by accident.

Saya menyokong Ronniu bukan disebabkan saya menyokong DAP.

Pernah saya bangkitkan nama Ronnie kpd Guan Eng. Guan Eng juga menyanjung semangat Ronnie and kefasihan beliau sebagai seorang multi lingua. ”

  24. Before I live in the US, I despise gun but now I think otherwise. If only people who rule has guns, the common people does not have power.
I used to date with a guy who read law in Lincoln Inn with Lee Kwang Kwee. He was nick named the Kapel Singh of Sarawak. He did a lot of works for the underdog, he used to tell me the worst people in the earth is police, he said whenever he saw them beat the hell out of the people who might not necessary had commit anything wrong , he wished he has born in America where the people has the same power as the police.

No gun is symbol that no one is above me, no one has greater power than me that HE that created, my creater. Oh no, until the dead body is the gun law in America stay, as long as hold the 1st Amendment like veryone else I will vote for gun law to stay.

Gun shoots rate is lowest in states where gun law is not illegal. In America, not all states allow gun law, some does not. The more the conservative the state is and not influence by the liberal thiking like everything goes, there is nothing black and white, man can marry man , woman can marry woman where God put the batang and the lubang for a special purpose, there will be sick people out there whether there is gun or no gun.

Nap, I live in Australia for 20yrs, UK for a number of months,
swiss, no place in this world is a better place than US the A. . It is not a perfect place, she has her own issues and problem, but at least I can say as a minority yellow skin I has the same right as my white America which I never has when I live in Malaysia where some of dad ancestor has been one of the native tribes who inhibited long times ago before any of the people in Malaysia has been, Chinese or Indians. Nah, I love America. It is a place where sky is the limit.I have my share in living in many countries. I am not too humble to say I live in more places in most people. I back packed for a year, went as far as Russia , Europe and Africa.

I came here with no cents, totally broke after the 1997s economy crisis, now I became so wealthy that I could not ever can imagined. Gold and silver investment, RE, internet business and my fat salary had helped me to acquire health . With my acquire wealth I am able to do a lot of charity works I choose to (missionaries especially in China),

Though I came here in my late 30’s, I can change my career from IT to med. Yes, I had my master degree in computer Science in the early 80’s, Was one of the first Asian women to implement a computer system for a bank in H.K for a Malaysian banking group. No I am not Lilian Too, I am J. Tan and I am a Christian, I am not into fungshu.

I went into medical school when I was in my 40’s, isn’t it amazing ? with lots of scholarship and did not spend a single dime.

As much as people want to hatam US inside out , outside in, I owe America a whole lot. I was born with a hole in my heart, a hole in my vale and a complete heart block. If I have continue to live in Boleh land, the wait in Jantung hospital to have my open heart surgery is 2 years waiting list. The only alternative is private hospital in Asunta, Subang or Mt. E in Singapore which would cost me about RM1/2 million which how on earth could I afford even though I was earning like RM$6k ?I would have died long time and have gone to long mountain to sell salted eggs but no, I had my open heart at the age of 42 in USA on the following week after I saw my cardiologist, yes everyone in countries want universal healthcare but do the realized the Chinese sayings that “wool comes from sheep”, you hand over 1/2 of the money to the government on your hard earn money through tax to them and they turn around tell you you have free health care. I paid more than 50% tax on my Aus$82k./annum salary.

Nop, I will never sell America for million billion, I love America and its system though I hate the liberals to the maximum (no, I am not a good Christian, if I am good , I should love my enemy but I cannot yet :). I love my gun law and I will live in the state where gun law is not prohibited.

Jamy with a big mounth and will stand for justice within a heart beat. My blog theme reflect who I am. Pro truth, anti-socialism but first and foremost it is a blog where you find lots of wise investment advice, it is not a get rich quick kind of blog. It is a place where you live to work hard earn money through hard work , determination and perseverance.

You either love me or hate me, that is fine with me.

    Cheers !

  25. SUHAKAM has humiliated and toyed around since 24-7-2000 when I was called to KL from Ipoh just to attend its very 1st historic INQUIRY !!

I WAS TREATED AS A SILLY “guinea-pig’ for the commissioners to try out how INQUIRY was conducted !!

  26. “oops! you were not with them? saw u running away so we thot you were one of them”

  27. All these brutality against the armless citizen by the police is a sign of arrogance and desperation of our BN government. They have the arms to torture the armless without repercussion and still being praised by our ministers for doing a good job !

BN can never be wrong, whether they kill, steal, corrupt or sleep on their jobs. How long do we have to suffer these nonsense ? Please vote BN out and let someone else managing this country for better future .

  28. Check my post on Guns and liberty

  29. The BERSIH rallly would have been clean if it was not hijacked by the opposition political parties. The NGOs that organised it should have refused their involvement, which will give the rally more credence, the ordinary rakyat showing displeasure against the rots in the government electoral system .

With the involvement of the major opposition parties, many people are sceptical about the true motive of the street rally.

  30. What a stupid ass country. So its true.

    1) The place is a jungle, and
    2) It’s full of monkeys of various races

That makes Bodohland a third world sewer alright.

  31. I don’t see the reason why the opposition should not be involved ? “The BERSIH rallly would have been clean if it was not hijacked by the opposition political parties. The NGOs that organised it should have refused their involvement, which will give the rally more credence, the ordinary rakyat showing displeasure against the rots in the government electoral system .”

Why is the opposition in Malaysia has so little voice ? I felt so disgusted to see every road in Malaysia that is of opposition holding look worst than some guerrilla country: Columbia and yet the country boast of the tallest building, an astrounant !

Yes, without gun, you will have another 100 years of one party country.

  32. Kayatan,

    Guns protect you, no doubt.

If the one who trains his gun on you is the legal criminal, ie. the Police.
    What should you do ?
    Out gun him ?

  33. What do you think ? :).

  34. I dont blame the authorities. U yourself should be blame because never listen to the warning. Why u must attend and or participate in the rally?.Whether u support or not is another matter. U musnt take the risk of being there. Now u feel sorry for your self, unable to walk, feeling pain, unable to work to mention a few. Do you want your country in such a state. if you dont like this country, you go to Thailand, Pakistan, Iraq or Singapore then you know that it is good to have a peaceful country.
    Bye-bye

  35. The police are stupid. Sometimes I wonder why citizens have not taken to carry catapult to use against those bastards who are so sadistic as to want to injure the innocent.

I doubt the police will get away with it in another country.

While not wishing that the people rise against the authority, those vested with the authority to police the country must knows their bounds.

It would be bad for all if the day comes when the citizens take upin themselves to go against the govt and it’s agency.

May the govt be reminded that their behaviour is akin to those street thugs and as the govt were lected by the people, they should at behave like one and not lord over the people.
