Watched “Enemy of the People” on Saturday, a great play that Cheryl’s in (yes, of Cheryl’s News Network fame :)
Written by Ibsen in ‘82 (that’s 1882, my friend), the play is so clearly relevant to Malaysia’s here and now.So much so that anyone who cares about Malaysia should totally go see the play!!
The first thing I thought was: Yep, the people who put this together do know a thing or two about Malaysian society and politics :P :)
Me and Li Tsin saw so many parallels. Her Malaysiakini connection caused some resonance, and in my big-headedness, I fancied myself the very subject of the play, muahaha.
Then I realised that the play could well have been about ‘98 Anwar. The parallels were uncanny!
As Li Tsin reminded me, it also means that Cheryl played Izzah :)
I’ll try to ask my boss if he wants to go watch the play, but the man works so ridiculously hard!
The play is basically about one man having to stand against his whole community in his endeavour to stand for the truth. He goes from hero to villain to almost-hero to….. well, I think the ending is also appropriate to Malaysia’s situation :)
(ps- I think Na’a Murad’s performance can earn him an invitation to the Umno Supreme Council :)
Anyone else also seen it and care to comment? :)
Egomaniac that I am, can’t help but remember the fact that on the day I was arrested, I was wearing one of my better pants. Imagine how I felt hearing these lines during the play:
Dr. Stockmann: Yes, yes, I see well enough; the whole lot of them in the town are cowards; not a man among them dares do anything for fear of the others. (Throws the letter on to the table.) But it doesn’t matter to us, Katherine. We are going to sail away to the New World, and–
Mrs. Stockmann: But, Thomas, are you sure we are well advised to take this step?
Dr. Stockmann: Are you suggesting that I should stay here, where they have pilloried me as an enemy of the people–branded me– broken my windows! And just look here, Katherine–they have torn a great rent in my black trousers too!
Mrs. Stockmann: Oh, dear!–and they are the best pair you have got!
Dr. Stockmann: You should never wear your best trousers when you go out to fight for freedom and truth.

Why don’t you blog about whether PKR is still relevent in view of the Merdeka Center survey which shows little support for PKR?
[...] only reason I can be active in any of this is through the love of support of my family (go watch my sister’s show!) and the one and only polytikus, Li Tsin :) [...]
