Kg Berembang pics from 5th March & updates for 7th March
Finally managed to put up more than one thousand pictures that Lainie did a super job of taking on Monday at Kg. Berembang. Hopefully, some ‘commentary’ will be added to them soon.
Just keep a lookout for RELA weapons, fat SB officers video recording everything, red cloth bands, sketchy people hanging around, Acmar International t-shirts, and a personal favourite – an abundance of labourers with ‘hammers’ handy in their tool belts.

As for today, despite legal discrepancies, looks like Kampung Berembang has been taken down >:( The disappearance of structures not withstanding, we will continue to strive for justice – especially for those villagers – babies, children and elderly - who have been thrown unto the streets by a cruel government that serves corporations and not the rakyat.
The developers should be held fully responsible too – greedy, heartless thugs that they are. In case anyone needs it, here’s a reminder of who the big shots are who are profitting the most from crushing the poor into homelessness.
4 villagers and an activist have been detained but I’m told they’re expected to be released later tonight. Tian Chua has been remanded and is expected to be charged in court tomorrow for attempted murder. A t t e m p t e d M u r d e r :| :| :|
A brief idea of what transpired today can be gleamed from bangkit.net.

I was told there are transit houses available for those villagers at Taman Wahyu and Taman Dagang.. I was curious , why dont they move to the transit houses ?? Mind to enlighten me on this.. Thanks
Dear KS,
Thanks for your comment! As I understand it, the state government offered to sell cheap houses to the villagers, but they were extremely far away, in Puchong and somewhere else (are these the places you mentioned?)
Having lived in Kg. Berembang for more than 30 years, it’s not fair to ask them to move so far away, and they thus refused.
Hope that helps! Thanks!
I noticed the red armbands the developer’s representatives were wearing. Why does this give me the impression that the violent response was somehow pre-meditated?
This is so outrageous, barbaric, cruel ,despicable and inhumane, if we can rush to build camps and shelters for oversea’s natural disasters victims , why is the government doing this to our own citizens ???
ppl – right you are! government made tsunamis :(
bob – yeah, we speculated that the red was to identify who *not* to arrest :P
thanks for the comments!
Pls read my blog on this as well….

Hi,
I just found your blog yesterday when searching for news on all the immigration raids, and I’m glad I did – it’s really great. I was in KL in November and attended World Human Rights Day event that was put on by Suaram and a few other groups in an area where people where being displaced for development – although I thought it was a squatter’s town that had been demolished. They had set up camps to stay and protest. This isn’t the same story is it? I can’t remember the name of the area where the event was held.
I have a few pictures from it on my flickr, though: http://flickr.com/photos/tarajaime/tags/demonstration/
But I don’t know if those are good enough to be able to recognize. I would hope that this sort of thing doesn’t happen that often, but I know better than to hold my breath on that.
Keep up the good work here!
I just happened to browse through the links and found this blog. Well, I thought I’d like to share some inputs.
Some 30 or 40 years ago, the Government awarded a group of senior civil servants plots of land at or around the Kampung Berembang area for them to build residential homes as a reward for their dedicated services throughout their working life.
Some 100 or so recipients were involved, many dead over the passing years. At least 32 of them were issued Qualifying Titles and the matter just fizzled out as more of them died over time. Their next of kins faced brick walls everytime the issue is raised.
May I ask who actually owns land in that area?
My late father was one of those awarded about 5000 sq ft in those days and told his children (me included) to follow up on the matter before he died , but many documents went missing in the process. I still have some valuable documents pertaining to the matter and intend to pursue my inheritence. None of us have given permission neither expressed or implied for any party to squat on our piece of land.
Can anyone in here help me out? Many thanks.
