Batu Talam “Independence:” A mockery of democracy?
What on earth is going on up there?
Let’s take a long at highlights from two Malaysiakini articles.
“We just hope that he will not lose his deposit. Furthermore, we do not have any issues to bring up,” said (father of independent candidate Ng Chee Pang, Mr. Ng) Kwi Ling, who is also Pahang DAP treasurer.
No issues? :|
Asked for a manifesto, Kwi Ling, replied: “Our manifesto: I like Umno, PAS, Keadilan, and NGOs. (I) love MIC, MCA, DAP and Gerakan. (I) do not like, do not love the BN.”
O_O
Was it a misquote? Was he trying to be funny? Or has he lost his mind?
Perhaps some explanation for all this:
He reiterated that the main reason for his son contesting was “to give some business opportunity to the people of Batu Talam because, when there is an election, many people come here.”
The mysterious role/non-role of the DAP?
Chee Pang has denied that the DAP paid his election deposit.
He said, however, that the money was paid by someone but he would not reveal the name.

DAP Pahang chairperson Lip Tuck Chee told malaysiakini that the party’s state leaders met Kwi Ling last night in an attempt to convince him to withdraw his son’s candidacy.
“Should his son stay on to contest, it will have a huge impact on us. The candidate is a state leader’s son, and we will face a dilemma if we do not campaign for Chee Pang,” Lip said.
Bits and pieces about the man/boy himself:
When reporters asked for his contact number, he refused and instead provided his father’s phone number.
*
When he met the press later, the soft-spoken Chee Pang appeared nervous and could not handle questions over his political ideology and reasons why he chose to contest.
Asked for his academic background, the candidate turned to his father and asked: “Shall I tell the truth?”
With his father’s encouragement, he told the media he is a SPM certificate holder.
To a question on his background, Chee Pang was speechless and had to be prompted by a friend to provide an answer – mountain climbing.
?!?!
Again, either spotchy reporting, or spotchy (bimbo?) candidate.
Sigh, again: what is going on up there??

On a less bizarrely funny note, I read via Susan Loone and others about an article in Malaysiakini, Chinese edition. I’ll just go ahead and quote her:
Deputy Finance Minister I and MCA Women chief Ng Yen Yen had taken a sarcastic jibe at Batu Talam’s independent candidate, Ng Chee Pang.
In a press statement, she criticised him for his low education status, which is up to SPM (school certificate) level only.
She added that he needed to further his studies, while chastising him for having no political experience and having to rely on his father to respond to questions by the press.
She thus chided the young man for not having the necessary capability as a state assemblyman. But guess what happen less than 12 hours later.
Ms Ng, who was once besieged by the controversy that she was an Australian PR (permanent residence) when she became senator even suggested to Chee Pang to either study in TAR college or TAR university and apply for the Chang Ming Thien Foundation Study Loan established by MCA.
However, Ms. Ng retracted her statement in less than 12 hours. Her information and publicity bureau informed the press to do the necessary. Because apparently the UMNO candidate himself was also a SPM holder.
aheheh…
This post also took me to a scandal about Dtk Ng Yen Yen sometime back, regarding how she was an Australian PR when she took office as a Senator in 1993.
Just as sketchily, I also found out that she had been on the board of directors for an Australian company with sketchy businessman Dtk Soh Chee Wen. Crazy.
