Government’s flippant attitude towards violence against women – a dehumanising lack of perspective

“Maid abuse? What maid abuse?.. Where’s your evidence?? One or two cases onlylah, don’t talk nonsense..”

That’s basically the shameful attitude of Deputy Home Minister Datuk Tan Chai Ho (see NST and Malaysiakini), when faced with allegations that this is a widespread problem in Malaysia.

What is our government’s obsession with insisting that problems in Malaysia are ‘isolated cases’? If there are 5 maids being abused in Malaysia isn’t that 5 maids too many?!? Shouldn’t we be putting every effort into stemming the problem rather than saying ‘aiyah, bound to happen here and there right?’ :P

And does he really think no one in Malaysia is documenting these cases carefully? Groups like the Women’s Aid Organisation and others are keeping a very watchful eye I reckon, and Dtk Tan’s bold, sweeping ‘Where got evidence??’ may come back to bite him in the butt – let the warts hang out, I say.

I’m hoping civil society groups will come out with solid proof to make our government of denial eat their words.
