Days in Court and Unsettled/Unreported Accounts
Sorry I’ve been so far from the regular news. Been swamped, and it’s not looking to improve soon :( Tomorrow will have to go downtown to see Tian Chua, who is in the midst of a case where an Umno Youth mob disrupted a conference on East Timor in 1996. Via Malaysiakini:
On Nov 9, 1996, over 100 people - including 10 journalists - were arrested on the opening day of the Second Asia Pacific Conference on East Timor (Apcet II), which was held to discuss human rights abuses in East Timor and its struggle for independence from Indonesia.
As the conference was about to begin, 400 members from the Umno Youth-led Barisan Bertindak Rakyat Malaysia, or Malaysia’s People’s Action Front, broke down the doors to he conference halls, threw chairs and verbally and physically abused the participants.
Police then moved in to arrest the participants who were detained between one and six days, while 40 foreign participants were deported. The activists (incl. Tian) filed their suit to claim damages for wrongful detention and police negligence in discharging statutory duties to disperse the mob.
I think Malaysiakini also has some closer to home experiences with Umno Youth - Police coalitions. There’s also an old article in theSun about this RM 83 million lawsuit. (Guys, if you win, belanja ar!)

A few small other updates. I’m not sure why this made the news, but seems Barisan Nasional’s Moyog assemblyman Philip Lasimbang is in a spot of trouble:
The 45-year-old organising secreatry of United Pasok Kadazandusun Momogon Organsation (Upko) and his business partner Albert Boyou, 49, were charged for failing to tender the profit and loss accounts of their company, Steady Expansion Sdn Bhd for years 2000 and 2001
Hmm. I was told today that it’s not so uncommon that companies fail to file their accounts, even though this is a punishable offence. What makes Mr. Lasimbang so special? After all, the PNSB Acmar Company Report suggests that they haven’t filed their accounts since 2000 either. Should they be charged as well? Maximum jail term = 5 years.
I’ll try to get back to the news proper asap friends, thanks for your patience, and to all of you who’ve written kind words - I appreciate it!.
Some pics from the APCET inicdent, thanks to Malaysiakini:
